Amelie was the biggest foreign film of the 2001 season, and there is no doubt why that is. The film is a feel-good experience, with a bunch of cute scenes, a happy ending, and a lead actress who looks so very cute and adorable.
Amelie, however, doesn’t make her presence known; she puts the box in a phone booth, and rings the phone from another booth, in hopes that the man, passing by, will pick up the phone.
Amelie is a cute girl, and certainly is quirky enough, and sweet enough, to be a worthwhile interest for anyone who actually wants to meet an interesting gal for a change.

Amelie film review In Film Australia
Amelie, a surprise hit from France and a wonderfully accomplished picture, is about the stories of the people of the streets, told with the language of the streets.
After a bit of PI work, Amelie tracks down the boy (who is, of course, now a man) and after watching his reaction is inspired to do good whenever she sees the chance, needing no accolades except the satisfaction of observing her handiwork from a distance.
Amelie is a character which on the surface isn’t really that interesting or unpredictable but Tautou plays the role with an unaffected charm and earnestness which makes it hard for the viewer not to enjoy Amelie’s adventures.

Movie Spoiler for the film - AMELIE
Amelie's parents are quirky people, as detailed in their "likes" and "dislikes" by the narrator; Amelie's father Raphaël is a doctor, an emotionally detached man and her mother Amandine is a schoolmistress with a nervous tic in her eye.
Amelie makes suggestions, and it's through her suggestions that perhaps the girl is thinking of someone else, someone not in the picture-that we realize she sees herself as the girl, and throughout the movie the girl is a metaphor that the Dufayel and she uses for Amelie.
Amelie shares the discovery with Dufayel, pointing out to him the same man with the blank, belligerent face that repeats over five, six times in the book; her theory is that he's a dead man who took all those photos so that the living could find him, and remember him.

Amelie Movie Review by Anthony Leong from MediaCircus.net
Because of Amelie's overprotective parents, which had her schooled at home and forbade her from having friends, young Amelie retreated into her own imagination, which is where she still mostly resides today.

Amelie is joie de vivre in a nougat.
Not a film for everyone, but if you're in the mood for a little sensory overload, some spirited intellectual gymnastics and an introduction to the most intriguing new actress Europe has produced in years, get in line with the rest of the thrill-seekers.
The ease with which the perky, big-eyed heroine ingeniously succeeds in improving the lot of everyone around her and the painterly manner in which reality in every inch of the frame is "improved" constitute both the "quirky" charm and the pure fishiness of the film.
