During the 1960s, Lee had taken over the running of Marvel Comics but stepped aside in the early 1970s, allowing a series of Editors-in-Chief to guide the company through a fallow period that was laying waste to the whole comics industry.
A whole host of heroes and villains continued to stalk the pages of Marvel comics throughout the 60s and they were joined in May 1968 by one of the strangest of Marvel's characters.

When America's Best Comics first started out, they seemed shiny and new, a breath of fresh air in an industry that desperately needed it.

It is best known for being a thinly disguised version of DC Comics' Justice League of America, and for the 12-issue miniseries that made this group famous.
While writing the Marvel comic book The Avengers, writer Roy Thomas - a longtime fan of DC Comics' Justice Society of America - paid homage to those characters by having The Avengers face a group of villains loosely based on their successors, the Justice League of America.
Two years later, reportedly through an unofficial collaboration between the writers of the two comics, both The Avengers and Justice League of America featured stories in which their heroes encountered heroic versions of the other company's characters.
