The song was released as a single in 1972, to coincide with the album Simon and Garfunkel's Greatest Hits, and eventually hit #97 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Finally the realization dawns on the singer that, like El Dorado, the fabled America for which they are searching is an illusion, and all the travelers (and by extension all Americans) are seeking this mythical land in vain.
The song was completely rearranged by the progressive rock band Yes in 1971.

Simon was managing to make a living out of his music and during 1965 he and Kathy undertook a cross-country holiday in the USA, which would later form the basis of the 1968 song 'America'.
The song's climax sheds light on universal quest, but as in the final scene of The graduate, the individuals' inability to communicate is tragically apparent.
The song's narrator is 'empty and aching' without knowing why; something has gone sourly wrong with himself and his country, and in a vision of a suburban Armageddon he imagines the New Jersey turnpike clogged with cars all keen to search for their own vision of an America that has gone, perhaps forever.

Simon seems to wander in an imaginary past: the frantic cajun-bluegrass rigmarole of Gumboots, the Coasters-like sax-driven swirling novelty That Was Your Mother, the mournful vocal harmonies of Homeless, have the "feeling" of nostalgy, although their sound has never existed before.
Simon's simple and naive spirit redeems the pagan, ritual, primitive nature of the rhythm, and views the universal message of the civilization that produced it with the eyes of a Christian prophet.

There were two songs that were played on a local Philadelphia rock station that well forever be imprinted in my mind.
