Robert J. Branham - "Of Thee I Sing": Contesting "America" - American Quarterly 48:4   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
King's use of "America" unites these two divergent performative traditions and constructions of the song: in one, the song is regarded as the ultimate expression of American patriotism; in the other, it is a singularly important site for contesting the nation's character, self-image and actions.
As the song of freedom verberates and reverberates through the northern hills, and the lingering symphony quivers on the still air and then sinks away into silence, a low deep wail, heavy with anguish and despair, rises from the southern plains, and the clank of chains on human limbs mingles with the mournful cadence.
In the tradition of the jeremiad, "America" provides a succinct and immediately recognizable statement of national promise, a gauge by which to measure the gap between present conditions and the promise, and a millennial imagination of national destiny in which the promise is redeemed.

The Story of the song, America
Sometimes known by its first line, My Country, 'tis of Thee, this song was written in 1832 by the Reverend Samuel F. Smith.
There is a minor uncertainty here, as a writer in the Boston Evening Transcript claims to have sung it earlier than this in the Bowdoin Street Church, but Smith's own personal recollection continued to be that it was at the Park Street Church, and there is no reason to doubt his account.
It was considered to be "un-American" in later years (somewhat ironic, considering the origins of the tune of the national anthem itself!), yet the tune had actually appeared in America before 1776.

 LATIN AMERICA’S SWAN SONG
The spread of the global financial crisis to Latin America in general, and Brazil in particular, has changed the complexion of the problem in several ways.
Beyond this, Latin America’s troubles bring out in an even clearer fashion than before the unpleasant dilemmas that all developing countries (and perhaps even smaller developed economies) now face.
A good way to illustrate these dilemmas is to consider a classic analysis of macroeconomic policy in an open economy: Trevor Swan’s 1955 discussion of the difficulty of reconciling "internal balance" (i.e., more or less full employment) with "external balance" (an acceptable current account deficit).
