This is the history of the Americal Division, "Born in Battle" in the jungles of the Pacific during World War II and committed today to the rice paddies and mountains of southern I Corps in Vietnam.
The division occupied the area until the end of October when the unit was relieved by the 1st Cavalry Division, and the Americal began preparing for the long-awaited trip home.
In the center of the division, Operation Geneva Park was embarked upon by the 'Brave and the Bold' of the 198th Infantry Brigade and the 6th ARVN Regiment.

 Americal Division - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Under the command of Patch, the Americal Division was the first US Army unit to be sent to Guadalcanal, where it relieved the exhausted US 1st Marine Division, and carried the brunt of the fighting on the island from that time on.
Later in World War II the Americal Division (alongside the 37th Infantry Division, a Marine defense battalion, and supporting units) took up positions on the newly invaded island of Bougainville, and warned by intelligence of the storm to come, utterly defeated a massive and sustained Japanese counter-attack, which began on 7 March 1944.
The Division was reactivated in 1967 in Vietnam.

 VI. DIVISION AND BRIGADE MEDICAL SUPPORT
Although one brigade of the 4th Infantry Division was initially positioned in the coastal area of Phu Yen Province in III CTZ, the entire division was deployed to the Central Highlands by the end of 1966 to counter the steady buildup of North Vietnamese, units in that region.
During 1967, the division, and its predecessors in the Central Highlands, the 101st Airborne and the 25th Infantry Divisions, remained on the defensive.
When the Americal Division was reorganized under the ROAD (Reorganization Objective Army Divisions) concept in February 1969, three companies were added to the battalion and it was authorized a strength of 38 officers and 333 enlisted men.

 Combat Chronicle- Americal (Infantry) Division
Elements of the Division defended Henderson Field against heavy enemy attacks, 23-25 October, took part in the offensive across the Matanikau River in November, and attacked and took Mount Austen in January 1943.
During the period 25 December 1943 to 12 January 1944 the Americal Division landed on Bougainville, relieving the 3d Marine Division and was given the task of holding and extending the right half of a previously established perimeter.
The Division went on the offensive in March 1944, driving the Japanese east of Mavavia River, 7-9 April, and seizing numerous strategic hill lasses during the rest of the month.

 25th Infantry Division Association: The Units (Continued)
The 25th Division Artillery was initially composed of the 8th, 64th and 89th Field Artillery Battalions formed from the 8th Field Artillery Regiment, and the 90th Field Artillery Battalion formed from the 1st Battalion, 11th Field Artillery Regiment, Hawaiian Division.
Serving in the Americal Division's 132nd Regimental Combat Team as the direct support battalion for the 132nd Infantry, the 245th arrived on Guadalcanal on 8 December 1942 and attacked Mount Austin and engaged in heavy combat with Japanese defenders.
In 1975 the 2nd Battalion was assigned to the 5th Infantry Division as a howitzer battalion and reactivated at Fort Polk.

 Guadalcanal Campaign - Part II: December Offensive
On 30 November 1942, the 25th Division, under the command of Maj Gen J. Lawton Collins, was sent to the South Pacific to relieve the 1st Marine Division.
Staff officers of the Americal Division, having arrived in November, were working closely with the Marine Division staff and familiarizing themselves with the unique problems encountered on Guadalcanal.
The only ground forces on Guadalcanal in November were the Americal Division, the 147th Infantry, the reinforced 2d and 8th Marines of the 2d Marine Division, and the Marine defense battalions, which were needed to hold the ground already taken by American forces.

Constituted April 3, 1943 as the Military Police Platoon, Americal Division, it was activated on May 1, 1943 in New Caledonia, South Pacific.
In April 1967, with the advent of Task Force Oregon in Vietnam, half of the 148th platoon of the 18th MP Brigade and half of the 544th platoon of the 196th Infantry Brigade came together as the MP Platoon in support of the task force.
Major Warren Lucas was the Deputy Provost Marshall of the 1st Infantry Division in Vietnam when he was called to Saigon in the spring of 1967 to plan for the MP assets of a new task force being formed, called "Oregon".

Despite the fluidity of the tactical situation, airmobile command and control procedures enabled the division to move and to keep track of its units over a large area, and to accommodate the frequent and rapid changes in command arrangements as units were moved from one headquarters to another.
Although elements of the division were occasionally transferred to the highlands as the threat there waxed and waned, the general movement of forces was toward the north.
The 1st Brigade, 101st Airborne Division, the reserve of I Field Force, was summoned to Pleiku and subsequently moved to Dak To, a CIDG camp in northern Kontum Province, to assist a besieged South Vietnamese force at the nearby government post at Toumorong.

The Americal Division was already deep into some of the cruelest fighting of the Vietnam War.
In the letter to Gen. Creighton Abrams, the commander of all U.S. forces in Vietnam, Glen accused the Americal division of routine brutality against civilians.
But "this by no means reflects the general attitude throughout the Division." Indeed, Powell's memo faulted Glen for not complaining earlier and for failing to be more specific in his letter.

At their initial briefing the 71st, with several other companies from their battalion and the 101st Airborne Division we were told they were going to support the largest operation in the history of the war, Operation Dewey Canyon II and Lam Son 719.
In January 1968, the unit was transferred to Americal Division and formed the basis of Companies A and B, 123rd Bn.
It became part of the 16th Group and the Americal Division in January 1968.

Northern Americal AO from Da Nang to Quang Ngai.
The two Americal Division Area of Operations (AO) maps include the entire Division's AO and then some, from Da Nang in the north to the southern end of I Corps at FSB Thunder, then continues south to Qui Nhon and Tuy Hoa.
The red markings in the Americal AO were put on the maps by Jim in 1971 when he used them.

 Donald Blaisdell in WWII...Americal Division
On March 12, 1944, Private Don Blaisdell was stationed with the Americal division on Bougainville, Solomon Islands on Hill 260.
The division was engaged in a fire-fight with the Japanese, when an officer noticed a wounded man about 40-50 yards down a hill.
The man was shot in both his legs and was entangled in barbed wire.

The award was presented to Jim at the 7th Infantry Division HQ at Camp Hovey, Korea in April of 1970, two years after the nighttime attack on Company A in the Que Son Valley on 29 April 1968.
The Americal Division published this award in 1970.
We never found that award in the Americal Division records because it was published in July of 1968 at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, where Jim was recovering in the Medical Holding Detachment.

After his first one-year tour and a series of successful training assignments in the United States, Maj. Powell returned for his second Vietnam tour on July 27, 1968.
This time, he was no longer a junior officer slogging through the jungle, but an up-and-coming staff officer assigned to the Americal division.
Glen's letter was forwarded to the Americal headquarters at Chu Lai where it landed on Maj. Powell's desk.

What follows is an excerpt (from page 20) from the Americal ORL for April, 1968.
On 23 APR 68, CAP 135 vic BS 7197 was attacked by the 95th LF Sapper Co supported by elements of the P-31 LF Co and 48th LF Bn.
Reaction by the CAP unit and reinforcements from the Americal Division resulted in 11 VC KIA, 2 C/S and 6 Ind wpns captured.
