  BBC - Science & Nature - Horizon - Flight 587
The airline and the manufacturer blame each other for creating a situation in which the stress on the rudder and tailfin exceeded the so-called ultimate load, the worst-case scenario set by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
Airbus Industrie argue that American Airlines' training programme contributed to the crash by teaching pilots to use the rudder in certain instances.
The airline counters that their pilots were safely trained and that there is evidence Airbus failed to inform them about potential dangers with the rudder design, evidence that was available from earlier incidents.

American, the only U.S. airline to use that type of Airbus plane for passenger service, claims Airbus didn't alert it to the danger of sharp rudder movements until after the crash.
American has waged an aggressive campaign in recent weeks to convince the NTSB board, its staff and the agency's investigative staff that the plane's manufacturer hid damning evidence of previous incidents involving the rudder of the same aircraft model.
American's last-minute lobbying has succeeded in raising fresh doubts among some board members about whether American, Airbus SAS and the board communicated effectively about safe operation of the A300-600's rudder, according to sources familiar with the investigation who spoke on condition of anonymity because the findings were not official yet.

USATODAY.com - NTSB blames pilot error for Flight 587 crash   (Site not responding. Last check: )
WASHINGTON — A pilot's side-to-side maneuvering of American Airlines Flight 587 was "unnecessary and excessive" and tore the jet apart in midair before it slammed into a neighborhood in Queens, N.Y., in 2001, the National Transportation Safety Board concluded Tuesday.
Flight 587's co-pilot, Sten Molin, used the rudder in an overly aggressive manner as he reacted to turbulence from the wake of a larger jet that had taken off earlier from the same runway, the NTSB said.
American's flight simulators and pilot training were poorly designed and could have taught Molin to inappropriately use the rudder, the NTSB said.

With the American Government frantically trying to halt the slide in US stocks and shares brought about by the events of September 11, the last thing it needed was a large Airbus A300-600 crashing into a New York suburb.
By the time Flight 587 reached Rockaway it was completely out of control, subject to almost unbelievably high lateral sheer stresses (whiplash), because the vertical stabilizer was two miles behind the aircraft, back in Jamaica Bay.
Flight 587’s stabilizer looks a lot skinnier than the ones on the thumbnails, but this is to be expected because, as previously stated, the moveable rudder at the rear of the stabilizer is missing.
