When the nation’s professional astronomers gathered for their third national meeting in September 1899 at Yerkes Observatory in Williams Bay, Wisconsin, they made a decision that proved profound for the discipline’s future—they founded the organization that would become the American Astronomical Society (AAS).
According to the American Institute of Physics’ Society Membership Profile 2002, 10% of the U.S. resident members of the AAS work in industry or are self-employed, 12% hold government positions, 14% work at federally funded RandD centers, and 5% are employed in the nonprofit sector.

Although it is hard to become an astronomer, most who get graduate degrees in the field are employed (fewer than 2% are unemployed) and most feel that their graduate education prepared them well for their current job.
This guide covers all of the most popularly asked questions like what astronomers do, what kind of astronomers are there, how easy is it to get a job, how much do astronomers get paid etc. Other websites with useful information about a career in astronomy include the NOAO website and the Astronomy Cafe.

By analyzing the images for telltale distortions, they have inferred the presence of dark matter along the line of sight between Earth and any of these quasars.
Bahcall cautions, however, that it will take another set of Hubble observations, scheduled for late January, to rule out the possibility that the second image merely represents light emitted by a star or galaxy that happens to lie along the same line of sight as the quasar.
