American Baptist Churches USA (ABCUSA) is a group of Baptist churches within the United States; headquartered in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania.
Baptists in the south withdrew support from the Triennial Convention and formed the Southern Baptist Convention in 1845, utilizing a more centralized organizational structure for carrying on missionary and benevolent enterprises.
The Baptist churches in the north have not grown to the extent of those in the south, perhaps being less evangelical, and having greater ecumenical interests.

At the 1956 convention, the committee presented a report in which it recommended that a sixth seminary be established as soon as a location was chosen and sufficient funding was available.
Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary remained the smallest of the Southern Baptist seminaries.

It should be noted that, while ABC is on average the least fundamentalist Baptist denominational association in the United States, there is also the American Baptist Association, a smaller group which is among the most "ultraorthodox" Landmark Baptist groups, having split from the Southern Baptists in 1905 because of the SBC's doctrinal laxness.
Thus, some liberal Baptist churches are dually aligned with the United Church of Christ, in one case even with the Unitarian/Universalist Association, while some less liberal churches are dually aligned with the Church of the Brethren, the Mennonites, the Methodists, the Presbyterians, and in at least one case the Lutherans.
Note that a church in Pensacola that is affiliated with "ABC of the South" is an "American Baptist church", whereas a Boston church that is affiliated with the "Baptist Convention of New England" (a regional body of the SBC) is a "Southern Baptist church" even though it's in the North.

American Baptist News Service (Valley Forge, Pa. 6/15/04)--Gilbert B. Brink, a prominent American Baptist lay leader who was instrumental in establishing The Laymen's Hour, a long-running radio ministry, died June 3 at age 97.
Brink and three other American Baptist men launched The Laymen's Hour, a radio music and worship ministry of the (then) Northern Baptist Convention, in the late 1940s.
Brink was the recipient of American Baptist Churches USA Cora and John Sparrowk President's Award in 1997.

Several churches have been disfellowshipped from American Baptist regions for membership in the Association of Welcoming and Affirming Baptists, a 50-church pro-gay organization.

American Baptist News Service (Valley Forge, Pa. 3/2/04)--Dr. Louis Knoll, former American Baptist International Ministries missionary in South India, died Feb. 12 at age 78.
He also was mission correspondent and legal representative for American Baptist mission work in South India and was an active consultant for the Assam and Bengal-Orissa fields.
From 1978 to 1985 he was vice president of business and financial affairs at American Baptist Seminary of the West.
