American Beauty is the fifth album by the Grateful Dead.
Both Workingman's Dead and American Beauty were extremely innovative at the time for their fusion of bluegrass, rock and roll, folk music and, especially, country music.
American Beauty peaked at #30 on Billboard's Pop Albums chart (North America), while the single, "Truckin'", peaked at #64 on the Pop Singles chart and achieved considerable FM rock radio airplay.

American Beauty was the band's fifth studio album (they also had released their first live album by this time) and was released in November of 1970.
Most of the album is awash in acoustic sounds, with minimal electric flourishes that nonetheless accomplish the ultimate goal of fleshing out the songs without making them feel bombastic.
American Beauty was reissued in 2001 with bonus tracks tacked onto the end.

American Beauty: (Thomas Newman) Hot off the film's remarkable success, Thomas Newman's arthouse score was not only nominated for a Golden Globe, but has been elevated by many to critics to award-winning status.
Newman's score to American Beauty is practically interchangeable with this year's The Green Mile, seeing as how he employs just as many funky instruments as he did in the score for the Darabont film.
American Beauty is quite functional as a score during the film, but as was the case with The Green Mile, this score isn't one which can be listened to over and over aside from the film.

American Beauty is the definitive Grateful Dead release.
With a largely acoustic approach to their songs and a move away from a live jam applied to studio music, The Dead were working to redefine themselves, bringing maturity to their years with a combined attempt to translate that to vinyl (hey, the medium of the time – still cool if you ask me).
Aoxomoxoa, the band’s album prior to American Beauty, is a jam extravaganza.

If I were to discuss a list of albums that qualify as `life-altering', I'd have to say that few albums meet the grade as well as American Beauty.
As many people have already stated this album is one of the best if not the best Grateful Dead studio albums recorded, containing the perfect mix of rock blues and country.
This album has influenced so many other artists like Ryan Adams, his album cover for Cold Roses is a copy of this American Beauty's art and the music is a reflection of the Dead.

Running about 37 minutes long, this album really didn't need to be any longer - it was quite enjoyable as is. American Beauty looks like it might do rather well at the Golden Globes, and come Oscar time, I'm sure it will do rather well then as well.

The album prominently features Garcia's pedal steel playing--there is not a single Garcia guitar solo to be found anywhere!--and friend David Grisman adds mandolin on "Friend of the Devil" and "Ripple." Songs like "Sugar Magnolia," "Friend of the Devil" and "Truckin'" became permanent fixtures in their live shows.
As history would have it, American Beauty is simply a masterwork, as complex and wondrous as the rose for which it is named, combining optimism and realistic expectation in a manner that embraces the complexity of life and translates it into a musical means of expression.
It should be noted that before this album was released, the Grateful Dead had amassed one true work of art (their previous studio album, Workingman's Dead), and it was all too easy to assume that it might have been a fluke of nature, a one-off that would never be equaled or surpassed.

 Grateful Dead-American Beauty (DVD-Audio) (1970)
Recorded in a very brief period only 7 months after their previous album Workingman’s Dead, American Beauty is more of the same folksy, thoughtful acoustic ramble with some haunting lyrics.
Not as melancholy as its predecessor, nor as involving, this album feels somewhat lost and with less clear direction than Workingman’s Dead - it is also less wholesomely musical, a quality which struck me about their earlier work.
Given that both albums were produced in the same year of 1970, and presumably by the same people, this is something of a disappointment.

In the process, many previously buried vocals and instruments came to the surface, and several songs were extended significantly by removing the original fades.

Three of the album's four bonus tracks are lengthy studio jams; the sublime "Clementine Jam" has hints of John Coltrane, an obvious influence on Garcia's free-form guitar work.
Hardcore Deadheads may disagree, but if it hadn't been for these two albums, the Dead would probably be just a footnote in the history of rock and roll.

And, the sometimes breezy beauty of the harmonies and instrumentation belied the crumbling world in which the Grateful Dead lived, at times hiding the air of sadness that hung over tracks like Box of Rain and Ripple.
Although more than thirty years have passed, these two magnificent, epic albums remain as powerful as the day they were released, and as such are two of the finest recordings in the history of rock ’n‘ roll.
