Birdwatching - Free net encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
Birding is a hobby concerned with the observation and study of birds (the science proper is termed ornithology).
The most active times of the year for birding in the temperate zones are during spring and fall migration, when the greatest variety of birds may be seen, as many species that do not nest or overwinter in given areas may be observed as they make their way north or south.
Many birders take part in censuses of bird populations and their migratory patterns which are sometimes specific to individual species and sometimes count all the birds in a given area (as in a Christmas Bird Count).

It is estimated that of the roughly 672 million birds exposed annually to pesticides on U.S. agricultural lands, 10% or 67 million are killed.
Ironically it is often the same sunflower and/or other grains intended to feed backyard birds that may have been sprayed with lethal pesticides to keep pests (often including birds) at bay.
For the most part the backyard bird feeding industry has irresponsibly ignored this threat of pesticides, and has not supported organic, sustainable agriculture, choosing rather to concern themselves with the business of selling seeds/grains raised in the method of conventional farming.
