During the 19th century, many new states were added to the original thirteen as the nation expanded across the North American continent and acquired a number of overseas possessions.
Two of the major traumatic experiences in the nation's history were the American Civil War ( 1861 - 65) and the Great Depression of the 1930s.
After long debate, this was supplanted by the Constitution of a more centralized federal government in 1789.

 Sonny Boy Williamson II
One of the most distinctive and influential Post-War (and, although he did not record the, Pre-War) blues artists, he was so distrustful of interviewers that little has been known about his early life until long after his death.
One thing is certain, however -- between 1951 and 1965 he wrote, sang and played his virtuoso harp on some of the finest blues songs of all time.
He claimed to be born some time between 1894 and 1909, and variously called himself "Rice" Miller, Willie Williams, "Little Boy Blue" and "The Signifyin' Goat".

Handbook of Texas Online: HOPKINS, SAM [LIGHTNIN']
Sam (Lightnin') Hopkins, blues singer and guitarist, was born in Centerville, Texas, on March 15, 1912, the son of Abe and Frances (Sims) Hopkins.
He was also the subject of a documentary, The Blues According to Lightnin' Hopkins, which won a prize at the Chicago Film Festival for outstanding documentary in 1970.
His songs were often autobiographical, making him a de facto spokesperson for the southern black community that had no voice in the white mainstream until blues attained a broader popularity through white singers like Elvis Presley.

Blues concert series sizzles - The Clarion-Ledger
The truth of this claim is hard to assess, but one of the major reasons for its popularity is the American Folk Blues Festival, a series of annual package tours that introduced Europeans to a wide array of American artists.
Fans of traditional blues will be thrilled by 1967 performances by the legendary Mississippi bluesmen Skip James, Bukka White and Son House, who performs his classic Death Letter Blues.
The festival was organized in 1962 by two German promoters, who often enlisted Willie Dixon, the Vicksburg native and renowned producer and songwriter, to arrange the all-star casts.

Modern electric blues guitar can be traced directly back to this Texas-born pioneer, who began amplifying his sumptuous lead lines for public consumption circa 1940 and thus initiated a revolution so total that its tremors are still being felt today.
Few major postwar blues guitarists come to mind that don't owe T-Bone Walker an unpayable debt of gratitude.

Teaching the Journal of American History
At the other end of the blues spectrum, Black Swan did record the singer and actress Isabelle Washington, whose bluesy renditions of popular songs sounded "white"--that is, the mannered warble of her voice conformed to stereotypes about white singers' thin, controlled, trained voices, in contrast to the muscular, roughhewn singing style ascribed to African Americans.
But African Americans themselves exercised little control over the terms of their employment or the kinds of music they could produce professionally, and by the late 1910s they were even being displaced as the primary interpreters of the musical styles they had originated.
When African Americans did make records, the recordings were limited to comedy or novelty styles, which established "coon songs" and minstrelsy as the paradigm of African American culture within the industry.

As profound as the blues has been to the national music experience, it has only occasionally entered the American classroom, mostly through individual teachers who were committed blues fans and who created their own methods to integrate the music into curricula.
The Blues educational outreach campaign, created by Experience Music Project, provides teaching strategies and resources for teachers to assist in the integration of blues music, culture, and history into American classrooms, with emphasis on grades 9-12.
A roots music form that evolved out of African-American work songs, field hollers, spirituals, and country string ballads more than a century ago, the blues is the foundation of virtually every major American music form born in the 20th century, including jazz, rhythm and blues, rock and roll, and hip hop.

 Blues
What is now recognizable as the standard 12-bar blues form with A A1 B form is documented from oral history and sheet music as appearing in African-American communities throughout the region along the lower Mississippi River during the decade of 1900s (and performed by white bands in New Orleans at least since 1908).
A form of American roots music, blues has been a major influence on later American and Western popular music, finding expression in ragtime, jazz, big bands, rhythm and blues, rock and roll and country music, as well as conventional pop songs and even modern classical music.
