The ensemble is the longest continuously performing brass quintet in North America, and has performed on the world’s major concert stages to accolades from audiences and critics alike.
The American Brass Quintet is currently comprised of Raymond Mase and Devin Cobb (trumpets), David Wakefield (horn), Michael Powell (trombone), and John Rojak (Bass trombone).
The appearance by the American Brass Quintet is supported, in part, by the National Endowment for the Arts, the American Brass Chamber Music Association, Inc., and the Southern Arts Federation.

The American Brass Quintet (ABQ) concert was a fine mix of the old and the new.
Quintet 99 was premiered July 20, 1999, hence the title.
It is difficult to comment further on this performance other than to say that this quintet continues to live up to the expectation that their performances will be polished, balanced and performed with the utmost musical expression.

The 125th anniversary season of the Artist Recital Series ends not with a whimper but a blast when the American Brass Quintet (ABQ) presents the final concert in the series Tuesday, April 20, at 8 p.m.
The ABQ keeps the stage to itself for the first half, performing A Suite of 17th-Century Dances by Thomas Simpson and William Brade in an edition orchestrated by ABQ trumpeter Raymond Mase; Fantasia e Rondo by Osvaldo Lacerda; and Morning Music by David Sampson.
Besides Mase, the other members of the ABQ are Kevin Cobb, also on trumpet, David Wakefield on horn, Michael Powell on trombone, and John D. Rojak on bass trombone.

In the late 16th and 17th centuries the horn, from this time usually made of brass, was lengthened and coiled--first in a small, spiral coil, later in a wider, open loop.
The family of saxophones patented in 1846 by Adolphe Sax combines the single reed of the clarinet with the bore and fingering patterns of the oboe, producing the tonal qualities of neither.
The instruments fit well into bands, for their sound blends well with brass and woodwind instruments; their application to the orchestra has been more limited, because saxophones tend to dominate the varied tonal characteristics of that ensemble.
