To be awarded the American Campaign Medal, a service member was required to either perform one year of consecutive duty within the continental borders of the United States, or perform 30 days consecutive/60 non-consecutive days of duty outside the borders of the United States but within the American Theater of Operations.
The American Theater was defined as the entirety of the United States to include most of the Atlantic Ocean, a portion of Alaska, and a small portion of the Pacific bordering California and Baja California.
The first recipient of the American Campaign Medal was General of the Army George C. Marshall.

The medal was issued to commemorate the service performed by personnel of the Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard who served during the periods and in the areas designated below.
Effective Oct. 12, 1945, service members who served in the continental United States for an aggregate period of one year between Dec. 7, 1941 and March 2, 1946, inclusive, may be awarded the American Campaign Medal under such regulations as the Secretary of War and Secretary of the Navy may severally prescribe.

The medal was designed by Thomas Hudson Jones, but the reverse side was designed by Adolph A. Wienman and is the same as on the European- African-Middle Eastern and the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign medals.
For three campaigns a bronze star could be awarded, for the Antisubmarine, the Ground Combat or the Air Combat Campaigns, all between December 7th 1941 and September 2nd 1945.
