African Americans comprise 39% of the disfranchised population, even though they comprise only 5% of the voting age population.The inequities in Wisconsin’s justice system compared to the rest of the nation are just beginning to be studied with no solutions on the table.
Although we are disheartened by the electoral result of the discriminatory constitutional amendment to ban civil unions and marriage and to reinstate the death penalty, we will continue the fight for equal protection and justice in Wisconsin.

Based in New York City, the ACLU evolved from earlier groups that responded to attacks on American pacifists during World War I and sought to defend the civil rights of conscientious objectors.
In 1945 the national organization of the ACLU accused the CCLC of partisanship and Communist leanings and threatened the committee with expulsion.
In the mid-1970s, the ACLU of Illinois was widely criticized when it defended the rights of neo-Nazis who sought to hold a public march in Skokie, a community with a large Jewish population north of the city, where about 10 percent of the population were German concentration camp survivors.

ACLU attorneys helped to reshape American constitutional law, with the idea of the First Amendment providing a shield for "preferred freedoms" beginning to take hold.
This was the same period when Baldwin became increasingly disturbed by events in the Soviet Union, where purge trials were being undertaken, and by politically troublesome accusations leveled at the ACLU by the House Committee on un-American Activities.
