AMA (Ethics) American College of Emergency Physicians
Emergency physicians should understand established criteria for the determination of death and should be prepared to assist families in decisions regarding the donation of a patient's organs for transplantation.
The American College of Emergency Physicians has suggested that to act as an expert witness, at a minimum, a physician should be board certified or board prepared in emergency medicine and be in the active practice of emergency medicine for three years prior to the date of the incident.
Emergency medical practice impacts the use of expensive technology and the distribution of health care resources; therefore, emergency physicians must attempt to reconcile the goals of equitable access to health care and just allocation of health care with the increasing scarcity of resources and the need for cost containment.

And while doctors have taken notice of Edwards's change in tone, many say they remain skeptical, especially because Edwards was among the Democrats who blocked a vote on changes in medical malpractice rules, often referred to as tort reform, in the Senate last summer.
Their numbers are magnified by sympathetic friends and family members and, election data shows, because they are a particularly engaged segment of the electorate.
