 Geary to be renamed American Conservatory Theater
The Geary Theater, a mainstay in San Francisco's cultural life since 1910, will be renamed Wednesday evening after a branding study showed that visitors were unable to distinguish the American Conservatory Theater playhouse from its neighbor, the Curran Theatre, as well as other Best of Broadway theaters, a representative for the theater group said.
The historic auditorium will be rechristened the American Conservatory Theater by proclamation of Mayor Gavin Newsom in a preshow ceremony before Tom Stoppard's "Travesties," which will mark the opening of the 40th season of ACT.
After ACT purchased the building in 1974, the Geary was awarded a place on the U.S. Department of the Interior's National Register of Historic Places and was named a landmark of the state of California and the city and county of San Francisco.

AATC collaborated with Latina Theater Lab to present Close Encounters of the Third World in April 2000, and presented 18 Mighty Mountain Warriors, and Culture Clash that featured cutting-edge comedy skits, monologues, and musical numbers by and about Asian Pacific Islander American and Chicano/Latina issues, and the intersection of the two communities.
