Topic: American Democratic Party

  Welcome to The American Presidency
The Democratic party of the United States is one of the oldest surviving political organizations in the world.
In view of its dependence upon popular support in both the North and the South, the Democratic party was under particular pressure to forestall bloodshed at the frontiers, moderate the adamant abolitionists of the North, and maintain the agriculture economy, slave supported though it was, of the South.
Many Southern Democratic leaders registered their disapproval by supporting the Dixiecrat ticket in 1948, and consequently fundamental issues of party discipline and party loyalty were raised and debated at Democratic national conventions for the next quarter century.

 Democratic Party - MSN Encarta
In the 1830s, under presidents Andrew Jackson and Martin Van Buren, the Democratic Party developed the characteristics it retained until the end of the century.
Democrats argued that the national government should do nothing the states could do for themselves, and the states nothing that localities could do.
A major source of the party’s cohesion was its strong organization, which enabled it to fight elections effectively, keep the party together between elections, and shape and influence government decisions.

Civil libertarians also often support the Democratic Party because its positions on such issues as civil rights and separation of church and state are more closely aligned to their own than the positions of the Republican Party, and because the Democrats' economic agenda may be more appealing to them than that of the Libertarian Party.

This was in spite of the fact that two Democratic presidents had successfully brought the nation through that terrible conflict, and the Republicans on the whole had misjudged Hitler and had counseled a course of isolationism and appeasement.

Majority of American Muslims are poised to support the Democratic Party in November 7 midterm election in which several polls suggest that President Bush's Republican Party is likely to lose control of the congress while a Democratic Muslim candidate, Keith Ellison, is expected to become the first Muslim in American congress.
Apparently the American Muslim voters are leaning towards the Democratic Party because of the Bush Administration policies that substantially curtailed the civil liberties of the seven-million strong Muslim community in America in the aftermath of 9/11.
American Muslims are taking very active part in the mid-term election with voter registration campaigns and holding election forums to motivate and educate the community.

On January 21, 1856, the American party of Texas, abandoning secrecy, met in open convention in Austin.
By 1857 the American party had virtually disappeared in Texas, though many of its former members supported Houston's unsuccessful bid for the governorship that year.
In its short life, the American party made its mark on the Texas political scene by forcing the Democratic party to organize effectively throughout the state and by focusing on Unionist, nationalist, and nativist issues that perdured long after the movement's demise.

 WorldNetDaily: My un-American
Democratic Party
If I am right that the Democrats (under current leadership) are no longer an American party in any traditional sense, then this has massive implications for our two-party system — which depends on mutual respect and common goals.
Witness how my party acted during the Iraq War — undermining the president at every opportunity — even while knowing America's terrorist enemies were taking comfort in words like "liar" and "fraud" and "regime change." It was a very sad thing to watch for those of us who remember a different Democratic Party.
All they need to do is solidify their angry base — then entrench like an occupying army — and wait until Americans are desperate for a political "change." No one can break the stranglehold of a party that has a solid 40-45 percent base (as some experts claim), and few moral limits.
