It's like Turtledove thinks that his readers don't have the attention span to keep all of his characters straight.
Turtledove is not afraid to kill off some of his characters, so it's nice that you don't quite know who's going to survive and who's going to live.
Turtledove also spends time developing his next set of characters who will carry the next series, with the sons and daughters of our well-known characters finally getting their time on stage so we can get to know them.

I most enjoy modern history (20th century and beyond) and Tom Clancy sort of touches on it with his books but his are possibilities, while Turtledove is more of a "what happens if...", rather than, "what happens when".
I just finished the American Empire trilogy by Harry Turtledove and would highly recommend it to any historical fiction fans.
Here, the CSA aquired two states from the Mexican Empire, Sonora and Chiuhaha (sp?), sparking a second War with the United States.

Not being familiar with Turtledove's work in the past, this turned out to be quite an experience.
Set in an alternative world where the Americans sided with Germany during a version of the Great War and Canada has been occupied by the American Empire, the book concerns the struggle for power in America with the front runners, as the title suggests, a group of right wing fascists.
Perhaps if I was more knowledgeable about this era of American politics I could have been absorbed by the endless characters especially if, as I suspect, some were "real" in our history.

Turtledove gets his characters set for conflict--two of the new characters will be our "typical GI" and "typical sailor" types.
One hopes Turtledove will let the story go its own way in the upcoming books, rather than a slavish retelling of World War II, but that already seems a false hope (with an aircraft carrier for the US getting radar, we seem to be headed rapidly towards a Battle of Midway).
