I'm not sure when or how the swap was made, but the train left Chicago on the BN Chicago-Aurora main and was pulled by 4449, so if the swap was at Proviso it would have been inbound or possibly with light engine moves between Proviso and Navy Pier.

Although diesel locomotives first came to American railroads in the 1920s, their use was confined to switch engines, and later to passenger train locomotives.
Built in 1955, it pulled such famous trains as the City of Los Angeles, City of Portland, City of San Francisco, City of St. Louis and the Challenger.

I saw the American Freedom Train - or, at least, one of the steam locomotives that pulled it, twice during its cross country tour back in 1975-76.
In January, 1976, I heard on the news that the American Freedom Train was going to be stopping in Tempe for a couple of days at Arizona State University.
Sadly, although the train was on display in Tempe for four days, I did not have time to tour the exhibits.

Around 30 years ago, the Southern Pacific GS-4 4449 was dragged out of Oaks Park, put into operation, and used to haul the American Freedom Train around most of the western United States.
The Freedom Train came through La Crosse at some ungodly early hour in the morning, so I missed it.
As an aside, when the 4449 was shoved into Oaks park back in the late 1950s, Portland Traction #100 is supposed to be the engine that did the pushing.

I don't know that SP repainted their remaining GS-4 to Freedom Train specifications, but the Freedom Train was a way the railroads commerated the birth of our country 200 years later.
