The idea for the band first came about one night in the fall of 1983 when actresses Daryl Hannah and Hilary Shapiro were having dinner with Miles Copeland, President and founder of IRS Records (as well as being the manager of several bands including the Bangles and the Police).
American Girls played at an annual IRS Records event, where they turned the heads of many who had previously considered the band to be a manufactured "joke."
The bios of each band were remarkably similar on the surface - all-female, five members, southern California, IRS Records, etc. The American Girls were not the Go-Go's Part II; however, their search for an individual identity was, in a word, unsuccessful.

Girls morphed into "Dr. Theopolis" - in the same time frame, Gus married in 2000 and went back to UO to study for a Masters in Arts Administration, which he received in 2002.
He and his wife moved back to Portland at that time and he eventually went to work for the Zimmerman Community Center in the Pearl Dist. He is working there still but has been accepted into the PSU School of Urban Studies Masters program.

The band is very tight on this one and Duritz is in a more controlled space as he keeps a check on his emoting, letting the lyrics carry the songs instead of his vocalizing.
