American Gothic by Grant Wood,1930 + Biography
American Gothic is an image that epitomizes the Puritan ethic and virtues that he believed dignified the Midwestern character.
With "American Gothic," Grant Wood tells the story of Midwestern life and culture through the use of many traditional symbols: the rick-rack on the woman's apron, the gothic window, the pitchfork held in the tight fist of the somber farmer.
American Gothic received widespread public and critical attention and thrust Wood overnight into the national spotlight.

Wood intended his title as a visual pun: that upstairs window, with its pointed arch, is of the Gothic architectural style, a reference that finds multiple counterpoints in figures standing in the foreground.
The three-pronged pitchfork is one obvious example, but look more closely and you'll see echoes of the design on the face of the man, the bib of his overalls, and the lines on his shirt.

 American architecture, Gothic Revival Style
Gothic Revival began in England and became the dominant style for country houses and was popular with Queen Victoria.
Americans liked it too, but as just one of several romantic styles to be modeled at will to Victorian American tastes.
The fact that most of these details were originally designed to be executed in stone did not deter American architects and carpenters from doing them in wood, greatly facilitated by the introduction of the steam powered scroll saw which could cut from thin boards the scrolled ornament so often associated with the style.

American Passages - Unit 6. Gothic Undercurrents: Instructor Overview
Americans saw many reasons to be optimistic in the second quarter of the nineteenth century.
For the purposes of this unit, it will be useful to think of gothic literature as that which plunges its characters into mystery, torment, and fear in order to pose disturbing questions to our familiar and comfortable ideas of humanity, society, and the cosmos.
"American Gothic" contextualizes these questions in terms of five nineteenth-century cultural trends: (1) the image of the swamp; (2) interest in the occult; (3) the image of America as a "ship of state"; (4) abuse of reason and science; (5) the senti-mentalization of death.

Sister Wendy's American Collection | Selected Works | American Gothic
Exclusively Midwestern in origin, Regionalism portrayed American life as simple and rural, in direct contrast to the urban-based Realist paintings that had dominated the American art scene since the turn of the century.
In one camp were those who believed the painting was a celebration of "American" values; in the other were those who saw it as a satiric critique of the selfsame thing.
Some see the stray curl at the nape of her neck as related to the snake plant in the background, each one symbolizing a sharp-tongued "old maid." Sister Wendy sees in the curl, however, a sign that she is not as repressed as her buttoned-up exterior might indicate.

Meanwhile, by year's end, the American Civil Liberties Union, wielding the Freedom of Information Act (which the Bush administration has tried hard to limit), had pried loose a series of stunning emails and memorandums from disturbed and angry FBI agents who had observed interrogation sessions at Guantanamo.
They were writing their bosses back on the mainland, complaining of the nature of the "humane" methods military interrogators were using at Guantanamo, not to speak of the fact that some of those military or intelligence interrogators were impersonating FBI agents.

The Story of the American Gothic
The man was given a pitchfork to hold because Wood wanted him to be associated with haying in the 19th century rather than the more common farming practice of gardening in the 20th century.
Although the jurors were at first divided over whether to accept the painting, it eventually got into the show and even received a bronze medal and a $300.00 prize.
At the time it aroused great controversy and was called by one art critic "an insulting caricature of plain country people." But, the American Gothic gradually gained acceptance and has since become one of the most popular and widely recognized paintings in America.

 The American Gothic DVD Petition
Many of you have heard that Universal is intending to release American Gothic on DVD.
And just before closing down in spring 2001, dvdnightmare.com reported that American Gothic was taken off the 2001 release schedule because AG Executive Producer Sam Raimi, who's reportedly eager to do the commentary, is unavailable to do so this year, as his commitment to filming Spiderman is keeping him occupied.
Stumbling across a list of DVD petition sites gave me the idea to start such a petition for American Gothic, in the hopes that this might show Universal the ongoing (and still growing!) interest in American Gothic, and therefore speed up the release of the DVDs.
