Graffiti art was really its own thing: It had none of the irony of European "bad painting," and none of the anger channeled by disenfranchised artists of color whose voices were beginning to be heard for the first time inside the museum.
Graffiti had to be tamed in order to function as proper art, and that was the beginning of the end.
This "Graffiti" exhibition may well prove to be the proverbial handwriting on the wall, showing what we have to fear if exhibition development is taken out of the hands of scholar-curators and turned over to the education department.

 American Graffiti - Movie Review
Lucas' second feature film, American Graffiti, was a self-assured gem that established him as a major director (though a lot of studios still didn't want to bankroll Star Wars, proving that studio execs weren't any smarter in the seventies than they are now).
The average Americans depicted in Lucas’ film were unaware of all the ground that was being broken, but they shared the confident attitude and restless spirit of the time.
American Graffiti is a successful tribute to an era of optimism and competitiveness which was bitchin’ -- and now seems very far in the past.

Which is fitting, because when I caught up with the American Graffiti coupe at the Viva Las Vegas Car Show during the spring of 2000, LeMat happened to be present and accounted for, as well.
According to legend, Universal's marketing team concluded early that American Graffiti would be a financial flop, and to recoup their projected loses they ordered Travers to sell the Deuce coupe immediately.
Thus was born More American Graffiti, and Milner's hot rod was sent back to Orlandi's shop for a minor facelift, including a new paint job; same color, different paint, this time acrylic enamel.

Actually, both Star Wars and American Graffiti share quite a lot in common, in that Lucas had a difficult time getting backing for both, studio faith in each was low, and they both received a fantastic reaction from the general public.
Although American Graffiti largely has transformed from smash film to historical footnote, it clearly was a very important film that cast shadows beyond that of just its TV rip-off.
Really, only Ron Howard had achieved any significant success prior to American Graffiti through his role as Opie on The Andy Griffith Show, but even he needed the boost this film gave him, since he was having trouble making the transition from child star to adult actor.

I'm sure there are many who argue that the teen rituals depicted in American Graffiti and the art of "cruising" are long since out of practice, but I don't know.
Anyway, American Graffiti could be said to have ushered in the sub-genre known as the "plotless examination of aimless teenagers" flick, but its still the best.
The simple setup is actually brilliant, I think, in that we simply follow a group of teenagers over the course of night, as their seemingly separate and pointless stories intertwine.

If film and television historians have it right, though, American Graffiti was the catalyst for the 1950s Nostalgia fad that begat TV's Happy Days, Laverne and Shirley, and the blessedly short-lived Joanie Loves Chachi (not to mention Sha Na Na and Broadway`s Grease).
American Graffiti is a bittersweet yet comedic look at what the DVD publicity blurb says was "America's last age of innocence." In the summer of `62, JFK was in the White House, the Beatles were still unknown in this side of the Atlantic, and drive in diners and movie palaces were very popular.

 American Graffiti (1973)
Young George Lucas' influential hallmark film American Graffiti (1973) recreates the feel, landscape, and sounds of early 60s, small-town America - an historical time period (of JFK's Presidency and the New Frontier before the jarring assassination of late 1963 and the rest of an unpredictable era) that has since been irretrievably lost.
The film was Lucas' homage to the memories of his own teenage years in Modesto, California, remembered with vintage cars and dragsters, drive-ins (Mel's), an almost non-stop rock soundtrack, teenage activities (hot rod crusin' and makin' out), and characteristic hair and clothing styles.
