The American Gun by J.J. Maloney
Gun murders in Richmond, Va., reportedly fell by 41 percent after federal prosecutors there initiated an effort to put any felon caught carrying a gun in prison for five years, enlisted the aid of local police in referring cases to the federal court, and waged a publicity campaign to inform the public of the program.
The avowed purpose of gun laws – in the context of the current debate – is to keep guns out of the hands of persons who have demonstrated, at any time in their lives, a failure of character.
Gun magazines routinely print articles on self-defense, pointing out that small.25-caliber guns, for example, are apt to make a robber really mad if you shoot him with such an ineffective bullet.

The Failure of Canadian Gun Control
Canada's first gun law, in 1892, simply required a gun license for those who wished to carry a handgun but did not have "reasonable cause to fear an assault." Now, ordinary citizens are prohibited from carrying loaded handguns; and the government deems self-protection to be an insufficient reason for even owning a weapon.
American Blacks and Hispanics have a much higher death rate from shootings, in part because they are likely to live in poorer, more dangerous neighborhoods, and to receive less protection from the authorities.
Their gun laws are merely one aspect of the Canadian system of relying on the government to take care of everyone's welfare -- in contrast to the American system, where many citizens distrust government power, and insist that they possess the means to protect themselves.

Gun politics in the United States - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Originally formed in 1871, after the American Civil War, to promote marksmanship skills among the general population, the NRA was mainly a shooting-sports association that rose to prominence from its nationwide promotion of firearms safety, training courses and certifications it offered local shooting clubs and their members.
Opponents of gun control claim that since many criminals are able to obtain both legal and illegal weapons without a license, laws that entirely ban any type of gun may halt the use of guns only as a means of self-defense while criminals continue to ignore the laws and abuse the guns.

 DVD Talk Review: American Gun
Well, the subject of today's review is American Gun; a movie that sidesteps the discussion of firearms and takes a look at the consequences of guns in our society instead, allowing viewers to draw their own conclusions without the usual heavy-handed advocacy of gun control that usually comes from higher budget Hollywood films.
Movie: American Gun is the debut directorial effort of Aric Avelino that takes a relatively obscure method of showing three short films on the subject and edits them together to provide a diverse look at the impact of handguns in our society today.
Final Thoughts: American Gun may not be a classic film on the joys of gun ownership or the horrors of same but it was enough to lend pause for someone to consider the ramifications of the topic in general terms.

Rifle Shooter: The All-American Lever Gun
Gun history is a northern lake at winter's end, appearing as a pathway of solid ice when in fact every slippery step may plunge the unwary traveler into frigid waters.
Furthermore, Paco Kelly, in An American Heritage--Leverguns, tells us that "There was a fl-powder single-shot rifle brought out in the 1830s that had an underlever that opened the piece." It was a Yankee invention.
It is a quintessentially American design, recalling the days of the Old West and generations of hunters.
