MORE: Minnesota Opportunities for Reference Excellence--Dictionaries
Dictionaries will vary in the type of words they include, as well as the number of entries.
In some dictionaries, the first pronunciation given is the preferred one, in others the first pronunciation is merely the most common and all are considered equally acceptable.
Most dictionaries have several useful features in addition to basic definitions, and some of these can be of great value especially in a small library.

American Heritage Dictionary - Information from Reference.com
The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language (AHD) is an American dictionary of the English language published by Boston publisher Houghton-Mifflin, the first edition of which appeared in 1969.
The AHD was edited by William Morris and relied on a usage panel of 105 writers, speakers, and eminent persons for usage notes.
The AHD is larger than the desk dictionaries of the time but smaller than Webster's Third New International Dictionary or The Random-House Dictionary of the English Language.

American Heritage is one of three dictionaries I think are worth owning and one of two that I think are tied for best.
Merriam-Webster is the original Webster's dictionary; their collegiate dictionary is an abridgement of their Third New International Dictionary, the biggest dictionary of American English.
American Heritage has been around for about 20-25 years, I think, and to me what makes it most unique is its progressiveness and its quickness at cataloguing language change.

On the other hand, there are valuable entries throughout the dictionary supplying additional information on synonyms, usage, or word history, and these extras, such as the history of diatribe and the usage notes on discomfit, are interesting.

Ever since the furor in the U.S. that greeted Webster's Third New International Dictionary (1961) faded, it has become a given that dictionaries should be descriptive rather than prescriptive, a principle sanctified in Britain in the 1850s in Herbert Coleridge's original plan for the monumental project that eventually produced the Oxford English Dictionary.
On the whole, AHD takes an old, inherently prescriptive dictionary device and uses it to describe the majority and minority opinions of a group of facile users of the language.
AHD long ago established itself as one of the standard American English dictionaries.

Even stronger influences appear from the speech of the lower middle class, especially in urban centers, where large numbers of workers come in contact with the entire community in their daily work.
Many people assume that the mass media of radio and television have homogenized American speech into a nondescript variety called “General American” or “Network English.” This is hardly the case, however.
During the second half of this century, mass transportation and the automobile have revolutionized American residential patterns.

A feature of this dictionary is the employment of a usage panel to give advice; though all American and British publishers have an editorial board, only the American Heritage Dictionary polls its panel members and records their opinions in entries.

Many of our examples come from “vernacular” dialects of American English—everyday informal regional and social varieties with features like ax (for ask), hisself (for himself), and zero copula (as in He working) that are frequently stigmatized as nonmainstream, nonstandard, or worse (considered as evidence of ignorance, lack of education, or laziness).
Salient grammatical features like habitual be and zero copula, which are socially stigmatized by the mainstream but vigorously endorsed by some of their users as markers of oppositional identity, also represent the intersection of ethnicity and social class.
It is certainly not the case that all African Americans use them, and even those who do are most likely to use them in excited or informal interaction with their peers.

On one side of the field is ranged the party of science, the “descriptivists,” who hold that all standards are ultimately based on the facts of use, and that the business of dictionaries and usage books is simply to record those facts in a neutral way.
On the other side stand the “prescriptivists,” who insist that language is subject to a higher morality and that people who care about the state of the language have an obligation to defend traditional values in the face of growing laxity and permissiveness.
