The irony of this founding generation's historical efforts, in a discipline still then defined almost exclusively by methods of documentary criticism, and thus by sources recognized by their literate form, was that writings about Africa were largely those of Europeans.
Beneath the many technical issues and substantive debates along the course of this historical safari lay a constant struggle to convert these alien disciplines to their own historical purposes, that is, to qualify archaeology, linguistics, anthropology, and oral narratives as proxies for the dated documents of the established discipline.
The American Historical Association is the context that keeps newer styles of history from taking older ones for granted, and here is where older ones are exposed to resonances of the new that animate what they have already accomplished.

To crown the series of events attending the creation of historical societies came the organization of the American Historical Association in 1884.
Taken together these two expressions of historical effort have bound up the interests of scattered American scholars, intensified their purpose, clarified their understanding, and enabled them to lay better foundations for a national school of history than we could have expected to evolve under the old individualistic method of procedure.
They have had, also, an important influence on the writing of history, although it is probable that their best work is in the nature of a foundation for a greater structure to be erected in the future.

Article II Its object shall be the advancement of the interests of the American Historical Association, and the promotion of historical studies on the Pacific Coast.
All members of the American Historical Assocation who reside in states, provinces, or territories of the United States or Canada that lie wholly or in part west of the Rocky Mountains are ipso facto voting members of the Pacific Coast Branch.
Individual subscribers to the Pacific Historical Review who are not members of the American Historical Association may become voting members of the Branch by paying dues to be fixed by the Council, but the Council shall have power to waive payment of dues by such subscribers.

 Kerber Named President Of American Historical Association
The AHA is a nonprofit membership organization founded in 1884 and incorporated by Congress in 1889 for the promotion of historical studies, the collection and preservation of historical documents and artifacts, and the dissemination of historical research.
For most of American history, women's obligation to pay taxes was not accompanied by the right of representation; deep into the 20th century the obligation to be loyal to one's husband superceded the obligation to be loyal to the nation.
Jones said that as AHA president, Kerber will oversee an organization with a budget in excess of $3 million, a third of which supports the publishing of the American Historical Review, the leading scholarly journal in the field.

When Michael Bellesiles reported that gun activists were harassing him, the AHA passed a resolution defending scholars who come under attack for holding controversial views.
The AHA stands by its position that all scholarly work should be subject to criticism but that ad hominem attacks upon or harassment of an author are inappropriate.
Historical knowledge advances by the testing of interpretations, not by stifling interpreters, and not by indicting the interpreter's character for flaws in a table.

 Reporter's Notebook: Highlights from the 2005 Annual Meeting of the American Historical Association
The AHA's Arnita Jones told HNN it was because of the limits of the Washington Convention Center's physical layout.
American University's Anna K. Nelson, speaking about the records held by the National Archives, said, "It's not as bad as the Vatican but sometimes I think it is." But the longer she talked the more it seemed, as one man screamed from the audience, that it's "worse than the Vatican." Example.
After the officers of the AHA had finished with their reports, the meeting considered a resolution sponsored by students at Yale and Duke to require the AHA to adopt a policy of union preference to help encourage hotels and others to pay their workers better wages.

In June of 1897, the Association inaugurated publication of the Quarterly of the Texas State Historical Association, and fifteen years later the title was changed to the Southwestern Historical Quarterly, reflecting a need for additional content and recognizing the broader scope of Texas history.
