American History X - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
American History X is a 1998 film directed by Tony Kaye and written by David McKenna.
The title of American History X is derived from the name of a class Danny (Furlong) is forced to take after writing a controversial essay on Adolf Hitler's autobiography, Mein Kampf.
American History X touches on such controversial topics as racism, affirmative action, illegal immigration, the continued existence of Neo-Nazi hate groups within American society, the exploitation of vulnerable youth of all races by gangs, intra- and inter-racial violence and other topics that still split American society.

American History X arrived in theatres last November with little fanfare; I'm a tad surprised that New Line didn't capitalize on the controversial statements Kaye was making in the press.
American History X eschews a traditional three act structure; remarkably, despite post-production jiggering by everyone and his mailman, the film is not only coherent but also, for the most part, electrifyingly told.
American History X is likely to leave audience members bobbing their heads in agreement rather than inciting anger, as so many similarly-themed movies have.

"American History X" tells the story of Derek Vinyard (Edward Norton), a hate-filled skinhead from Venice Beach, California, who lives in a world of white supremacists.
They are skillfully contrasted with the present-day scenes that feature a fairly broad color-scheme, ranging from the American flag (which can be found in the background of a remarkably number of shots), to a room painted pastel pink.
"American History X" is a drama, driven mostly by dialogue, and as a result, the 5.1 channel Dolby Digital sound mix is rarely very active, but absolutely adequate for this sort of film.

 SPLICEDwire: "American History X" review
"American History X" might have seemed slightly contrived without a formidable, unsettling and ultimately sympathetic performance by Edward Norton, who stars as a reformed Neo-Nazi parolee trying to rescue his younger brother from the clutches of a White Power street gang.
Norton, who made an indelible impression in his first film role as a murder suspect in "Primal Fear" and has yet to disappoint, is pensive and provoking in the movie's present and terrifying in its flashbacks of his gang days.
But he admits when pressured by his principal (a perfectly-cast Avery Brooks, "Deep Space Nine"), who has taken a special interest in the boy, that living up to his brother's reputation is what drives his behavior.

"American History X" is the story of two brothers, Derek and Danny Vinyard (Norton and Edward Furlong) and their doomed involvement with a Venice, Calif., gang of racist toughs.
As punishment, principal Sweeney (Avery Brooks) assigns Danny to write an essay on the impact of Derek's imprisonment for a one-on-one tutorial he is imposing called "American History X." That composition provides the voice-over narration for screenwriter David McKenna's increasingly intense and tragic story, which alternates between stylized fl-and-white flashbacks and current events in color.
There are moments in "American History X" when Anne Dudley's string-laden score overpowers the stark simplicity of the film's message and other times when the moral of brotherly love is hammered a bit heavily.

"American History X" was already mired in controversy even before it was released, and it had nothing to do with the unfaltering look at a difficult subject matter.
What some viewers may find most disquieting about "American History X" are not the images of the brutal savagery that Derek and his cronies inflict on their victims, but instead the racist rhetoric uttered by the characters.
The ultra-right wing ideas upheld by the white supremacists are presented in an almost palatable manner, and in the absence of the images of swastikas and hate-filled violence, seem almost reasonable.
