These are just the clearest touchstones for American Idiot, but reducing the album to its influences gives the inaccurate impression that this is no more than a patchwork quilt of familiar sounds, when it's an idiosyncratic, visionary work in its own right.
And one of the truly startling things about American Idiot is how the increased musicality of the band is matched by Armstrong's incisive, cutting lyrics, which effectively convey the paranoia and fear of living in American in days after 9/11, but also veer into moving, intimate small-scale character sketches.

  Green Day - American Idiot | Review | - PlanetWisdom.com
“American Idiot” the single, was released August 12 at number 4 on the Billboard charts.
This energetic, undeniably Green Day-ish song is a sort of wake up call to the average American, who, they claim, is controlled by the media.
“American Idiot” seems to be referring to political brainwashing in particular, but the same principle applies to all aspects of the media.

Kaleo San Diego Church > Articles > Greenday: American Idiot
The song “American Idiot,” only begins to touch the surface of the album's intent and fury with the American cultural landscape.
Songs like “Give Me Novacaine,” and “Wake Me Up When September Ends,” do more to assess the human heart and define the source of Billy Joe's pain than most moralizing or neo-psycho babble speeches that are passed off for sermons on a Sunday morning.
American Idiot might piss you off, or it might bring a sly smile to your face, but it won't leave you without opinion.

Certain similarities exist in the music of American Idiot that have caused some to believe that Green Day "ripped off" portions of the album from other artists, although these similarities may exist simply because the songs served as inspiration, or even as references or tributes to the other groups.

 IGN: American Idiot Review
No, American Idiot is Green Day's masterpiece, their magnum opus, the indelible mark they have left on the music world forever.
Granted, the song "American Idiot" does have a "single" feel about it, but the piece is easily superior to most of Green Day's radio-airwave contributions in the past.
The song is as powerful and poignant as it is inflammatory; our President is reduced to the status of "gasman" and the picture painted of battle is as hellish as one might imagine.

American Idiot is the kind of old-school rock opera that went out of style when Keith Moon still had a valid driver's license, in the tradition of the Who's Tommy, Yes' Relayer or Styx's Kilroy Was Here.

Green Day: American Idiot (2004): Reviews
American Idiot is one of the most politically volatile albums to come out since the ascension of the Accidental President.
And, sure, as a whole 'American Idiot' can easily be criticised for its simplistic, occasionally naïve sixth form lyrics, all round pomposity and general adherence to the group's tried and tested formula of punchy three-chord pogo-pop.
Concept or not, American Idiot is still decent fodder for a mosh pit, a luagh and a sob session.

The Trades - Music Review: Green Day, "American Idiot"
One of the harshest political statements in a song, "American Idiot" endeavors to walk that line between free speech and John Ashcroft beating down your door.
One thing you'll like about American Idiot is that the band doesn't come out and say what they mean--everything is done on the story of this guy named Jesus of Suburbia and several other characters introduced later in the album.
The final chapter of this song is "We're Coming Home Again." Aptly titled, this is reminiscent of some of their more recent work with a little bit of "She" thrown in for good measure.

American Idiot is one of the worst songs on this album and it's a pretty good song.
Let's instead focus on the rest of "American Idiot", which starts off with a bang - a one-two punch of the punk rock of the title track and then the epic "Jesus Of Suburbia", which is a punk mini-opera.
Overall "American Idiot" is Green Day's strongest album ever, which is saying something considering they also have the pop/punk classics "Dookie" and "Insomniac" in their catalogue.

Green Day - American Idiot Review - sputnikmusic
"American Idiot" is the overture of a brilliantly demented take on the angst that riddles the youth of the world today, whether it be the truth or not.
The song works through its movements at a steady pace, proving to be a fine listen, but not as engaging as the care-free sounds of "Jesus of Suburbia." You'll probably want "Homecoming" to end long before it does, which is never a good quality for a lengthy "epic" to have.
That song's a decent ending, even though it makes the concept album end with a cliff hanger that probably wouldn't be finished (unless Green Day make a sequel to the American Idiot album itself).

American Idiot is what punk rock is about, if you don't believe me, try listening to The Sex Pistols for a while and hear real punk, not watered down emo crap.

I love this song and then for a while I got a little tired of it, but then you hear it and you like it again so I guess this song will last a long time and be remembered.
Green Day is managing to break that trend with a highly complex narrative on American Idiot (a teriffic album by the way), so keep in mind that their videos have absolutely squat to do with the message and concept their music is communicating.

Anywho, this idiot of America is left with a loss of what to do, without a girl, without anything, back at home, but still in that "land of make believe that don't believe in me"....so that's basically it.
In a nut shell, the American Idiot album is about one guy who is completely lost in an existantional quandry; he doesnt know who he is as a person, or who he is supposed to be.

 "American Idiot" by Green Day
Out of all the post-Nirvana American alternative bands to break into the pop mainstream, Green Day were second only to Pearl Jam and Soundgarden in terms of influence.
The main riff through the song is easy, as most "punk" music truly is. You will be working with fast chord changes though, all based solely on power chords.
Remember to play close attention to the timing with this, as that is the key to the song.
