With over 350,000 CPA members (in 2005), the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) is the largest CPA professional organization in the United States of America.
The AICPA develops the Uniform CPA Examination, one of the most respected entry-level professional licensing exams in the U.S. The test has recently been changed from an annual two-day examination to a test that can be taken on a computer in a testing center.
Certified Public Accountants are licensed by individual states, so they must follow the laws and regulations of the state they are licensed in.

He said that at the present time, the AICPA defers action on complaints where the matter is also involved in litigation and the panel is considering adopting a process whereby the accounting personnel involved could be subject to additional internal review or even isolated from audit practice until the civil litigation is resolved.
The Professional Ethics Executive Committee is continuing to refine the requirements of the independence literature to assure protection of the public; yet, at the same time, many in the profession and recently the SEC in some of its public statements have acknowledged the need to modernize some of the rules.
He said the AICPA’s efforts in recruiting high school and college students to the accounting profession is continuing with video and printed material that emphasizes the broad-based nature of an accounting career and the curriculum needed to enter it.

The AICPA supports this provision because the suspended losses would be freed up and utilized at the income beneficiary level and the QSST would have the proceeds of the sale to pay tax on the gain.
The AICPA would be happy to work with this Subcommittee and its staff as it explores the possibility of moving these important changes forward.

 The AICPA has long advocated funding levels which would allow the IRS to efficiently and effectively administer the tax laws and collect taxes.  Giving the Service the resources necessary to properly process tax returns and enforce the tax laws is vital to maintaining our voluntary compliance tax system.
The AICPA supports the IRS's long-range goals for electronic tax administration in general, and electronic filing in particular, and we applaud the success of e-filing for the 2004 and 2005 filing seasons.
We also support initiatives focused on ethics training for Service employees.  We believe that IRS examination and collections employees must be able to “step into the shoes” of tax professionals and vice versa.  Government workers and professional tax practitioners must be able to understand each other in order to ensure greater strides in tax compliance.
