American League Division Series - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Division Series was created after the 1993 season when Major League Baseball restructured each league into three divisions, but they were first played in 1995 due to the cancellation of the 1994 playoffs.
Typically, the wild-card team is assigned to play the division winner with the best winning percentage in one series, and the other two division winners play the other series.
However, if the wild-card team and the division winner with the best record are from the same division, the wild-card team plays the division winner with the second-best record, and the remaining two division winners play.

1995 American League Division Series - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The 1995 American League Division Series (ALDS), the opening round of the 1995 American League playoffs, began on Tuesday, October 3, and ended on Sunday, October 8, with the champions of the three AL divisions – along with a "wild card" team – participating in two best-of-five series.
As a result of both leagues realigning into three divisions in 1994, it marked the first time in major league history that a team could qualify for postseason play without finishing in first place in its league or division.
The Indians became the American League champion, and lost to the National League champion Atlanta Braves in the 1995 World Series.

Division Series History by Baseball Almanac
Until 1969, when there were no divisions, the team finishing with the best record in each league won that league's pennant and faced the other league's pennant winner in the Fall Classic.
As a result, the winners in each division were now required to play each other in a best-of-five Championship Series to determine who would advance to represent their respective leagues in the coveted World Series.
However, if the wild-card team and the division leader with the best record are from the same division, the wild-card team plays the next winningest division leader, and the remaining two division leaders play.

There is the regular season, the American League Division Series, the National League Division Series, the American League Championship Series, the National League Championship Series, and the World Series.
The playoffs were initiated in 1969 when the two leagues expanded from ten to twelve teams and were divided into two divisions of six teams each.
In 1985, the playoffs were changed to a best of seven series, which was a more realistic way than a best of five series to determine a pennant winner, but the American League had added one team to each division in 1977, creating six losers in each division.
