 Tangier
The symbol of America's historic fascination with Tangier is the old American Legation, a rambling 18th-century mansion inside the walls of the city's old quarter.
In the years that followed, Tangier would become a cauldron of espionage and international intrigue, a haven for smugglers and exiles, and a home for such American writers as Paul Bowles and William S. Burroughs, who transformed the city into the most celebrated expatriate colony of its time.
In 1777, Morocco, with its diplomatic capital in Tangier, became one of the first countries to recognize American independence.

Tangier is very much a tourist town, serving everything from Moroccan families on 2 month holidays to Europeans on one-day African excursions.
The Kasbah was earlier this century one of the most attractive areas of Tangier, but it has lost quite a bit of its old attractions, and there is a strangely remote and empty feeling to it.

AIMS is the only American Overseas Research Center to represent an entire region rather than one country and to administer its programs through overseas research centers located in two countries: the Centre d’Etudes Maghrébines à Tunis (CEMAT) in Tunisia and the Tangier American Legation Museum (TALM) in Morocco.
AIMS promotes the study of North Africa in American universities and colleges while working to increase the professional contacts between American and North African scholars.
To enable AIMS, through CEMAT and TALM, to continue and expand its programs, we are applying for administrative funds for salaries, equipment, supplies, and maintenance for our overseas research centers and funds for our research grant, language study, and collaborative research programs.
