Alex Lynch: American Mainstream Media: Institutionalized Subjectivity
Considering the power American opinion has over the world due to periodicals and broadcasts that span the globe, it could be argued that American mainstream media is by far the most important and should be the most scrutinized of any.
Another debatable usage in the linguistic repertoire of American media is "massacre," particularly pertaining to the city of Jenin in the Palestinian territories.
American media, backed in a corner, didn't question why the inquiry was cancelled; instead it blamed Palestinian officials for sending "disinformation" about the numbers of dead and questioned their "integrity" because of it.

 Mainstream Media - Global Issues
The mainstream media of the developed and freer, nations pose an often unmentioned or poorly analyzed problem: the lack of objective reporting that is not influenced and, to a growing degree, controlled by elites with concentrated ownership to advance their interests.
Media omissions, distortion, inaccuracy and bias in the US is something acknowledged by many outside the USA, and is slowly realized more and more inside the US.
However, due to those very same omissions distortion, inaccuracy and the bias in the US mainstream media, it is difficult for the average American citizen to obtain an open, objective view of many of the issues that involve the United States.

BuzzFlash > Contributor > American Mainstream Media: More by Will than by Reason
The media and journalism in the United States, for the most part, is a business with stake holders that occupy the top positions and although a majority of reporters may be liberal, the upper reaches of the system is dominated by those who have an overwhelming conservative lean.
Yet, the subject is hardly touched by the media and the reason is obvious; the protection of the system and, to use a journalist‘s quip, it would be a "conflict of interest" to allow a report on one‘s own downfalls.
But it is important to understand that, in the American mainstream media, there is not a struggle between conservatives and liberals, it couldn’t be called a struggle, more like a trouncing.

This dishonesty is entirely consistent with the mainstream media’s pattern of lying that recurred throughout the presidential campaign.
It is important to emphasize that we do not allege the conglomerates that control the American mainstream media have engaged in a conspiracy, only that they have damaged American democracy by conducting themselves with unpatriotic self interest and all consuming greed.

The idea of “citizenship education” grew from these ideals stressing the education of the American institutions, the value of democracy, thinking critically about their society and their roles in that society etc. But “with business groups looking to schools essentially to educate workers for a complex industrial society” an inherent conflict was brewing.
The elite domination of the media and the marginalization of dissidents that results from the operation of these filters occurs so naturally that media news people, frequently operating with complete integrity and goodwill, are able to convince themselves that they choose and interpret the news “objectively” and on the basis of professional news values.

The effect of the American mainstream media's obfuscation has been to leave most Americans viewing the conflict as an interminable and inexplicable war apparently based on religious hatreds.

I'm talking about the "mainstream media," which is being destroyed by the opposition (or worse, the casual disdain) of George Bush's Republican Party; by competition from other news outlets (led by the internet and Fox's canny Roger Ailes); and by its own fraying  journalistic standards.
Yes, I know: The notion of a neutral "mainstream" national media gained dominance only in World War II and in its aftermath, when what turned out to be a temporary moderate consensus came to govern the country.
The moment it made air it began to fall apart, and eventually was shredded by factions within the AMMP itself, conservative national outlets and by the new opposition party that is emerging: The Blogger Nation.
