During his tenure as Secretary, many of the foundations of American Mensa were laid including the Local Group and regional structure, the Annual Gathering national convention, Regional Gatherings, Local Group newsletters, the American Mensa Committee, national recruiting efforts, the American Mensa Bylaws and the creation of the National Office.
He was also American Mensa’s first National Representative to the Mensa International Board of Directors, serving from 1962 to 1965.
Sturgeon published the first edition of the American Mensa Activities Report in 1961 and served as its editor through July 1962; this publication soon evolved into the Mensa Bulletin, the organization’s national membership magazine.

Mensa Education and Research Foundation - A separate non-profit and tax deductible corporation linked with American Mensa that administers our scholarship program, publishes the MERF Journal on research into giftedness, and approves of all requests for research into intelligence conducted using Mensa members.
American Mensa, Ltd. - The national Mensa organization encompassing all local groups in the United States.
The Mensa Bulletin is the monthly magazine published by American Mensa, and sent to members each month.

American Mensa founder Peter Sturgeon, who launched the first Mensa branch outside Britain in his New York home, has died in Vienna at age 88.
Sturgeon retired as American Mensa president in 1965 to take a post in Switzerland with the World Health Organization.
American Mensa, based in Arlington, Texas, since 1995, has 52,000 members.

The American Mensa Admissions Tests are given for the purpose of admission into Mensa.
