 American Movie Classics
With the emergence of cable television in the 1980s, AMC offered a niche for these fans, who sometimes referred to the channel as the "Metropolitan Museum of classic movies." Indeed, AMC created a "repertory" cinema easily operated by a remote control.
AMC began in October of 1984 as a pay service, but switched onto cable's "basic tier" in 1987 when it had grown to seven million subscribers in one thousand systems across the U.S. This growth curve continued and by the end of 1989 AMC had doubled its subscriber base.
No, this was a late 1980s marketing device by American Movie Classics and the local cable system (owned by Time Warner), in Wichita Falls, Texas, a moment designed to launch AMC in that market.

American Movie (1999): Mark Borchardt, Uncle Bill, Mike Shank, Monica Borchardt - PopMatters Film Review
American Movie avoids the dishonesty and self-importance of most traditional documentaries by selecting a subject so genuine, specific, and original — and so flawed — that no matter what segment of the whole we're seeing, it seems very real and very very human.
And while it's difficult to tell how confident these people are in Borchardt's project, they dutifully trudge through snow, endure numerous retakes and all night editing sessions, pushed on by the intensity and conviction of Mark's visions and aspirations.
Now recognized as classics, these films were initially dismissed as trash.

AMC (an acronym that once stood for “American Movie Classics” but now it probably means “American Movie Cornucopia-of-garbage”) is a station I once looked up to but it’s no big secret that the channel hit rock bottom long ago.
Fox has started their own classic movie channel, and Turner bought up Paramount and RKO libraries and rights, so AMC doesn’t have access to the great stuff anymore.
The movies are cut to hell; constant, unnecessary interruptions, showing the same foolish crap over and over; and this network doesn’t even have sponsors!

American Movie Classics - Bad Girls of Film
Often thought of as primarily male vehicles, films noirs offered some of the most complex female roles of any movies of the 1940s and 1950s.
Stars such as Stanwyck, Tierney and Crawford produced some of their finest performances in noir, while such lesser known actresses as Peggie Castle, Hope Emerson and Helen Walker made a lasting impression on moviegoers with their roles in the era.
Many of those studied became archetypes of the film noir femme: Gloria Grahame as the impishly sexy masochist; Lizabeth Scott's duplicitous schemer; Claire Trevor, the ruthless spider woman; and Barbara Stanwyck--perhaps noir's most notorious femme--as the grim, unflinching murderess.
