American Notes was written soon after Dickens had returned from his, first visit to America.
The American Notes are, however, interesting, because in them he betrays his feelings when he does not know that he is betraying them.
It is curious to note the contrast between the cheery, nay Cockney, contempt with which Dickens speaks of the American Indian and that chivalrous and pathetic essay in which Washington Irving celebrates the virtues of the vanishing race.
