American Physical Society - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The American Physical Society was founded in 1899 and is the world's second largest organization of physicists.
The American Physical Society was founded on May 20, 1899, when thirty-six physicists gathered at Columbia University for that purpose.
They proclaimed the mission of the new Society to be "to advance and diffuse the knowledge of physics", and in one way or another the APS has been at that task ever since.

North American societies adopted a theme for their activities and celebrations, "Einstein in the 21st Century." On September 26, 2003, the SPS Council, governing body for SPS and for Sigma Pi Sigma approved the following events in preparation for the celebration of WYP2005.
The Congress was held in conjunction with the American Physical Society Four-Corners Sectional meeting, and with meetings of the Southwestern and the Arizona Sections of the American Association of Physics Teachers, as well as multiple SPS zone meetings.
SPS zone meetings, where undergraduates present their research activities, listen to leading physics researchers, and hear from various graduate school and career opportunities in physics, were held in 16 locations nationwide in the 2004-2005, with roughly 1,000 individuals participating.

One of the central problems of modern global society is that the culture that publicizes itself as the example of democracy, enlightenment, modernity, culture, and freedom, is the one that puts global survival in danger.

Physics publishers compete and add value with their publishing process and in the information that they publish.
During the process of designing and evaluating The American Physical Society's RFP to publish Physical Review Letters on-line, it became apparent that one of the requirements for an electronic journal is the ability to access information from multiple publishers through a single access interface.

Generations | Summer 2004 - Journal of the American Society on Aging
Something crucial to the survival of a society is endangered when the living are unwilling or unable to continue customs and rituals intended to regulate relationships with the dead.
This view does not yet seem to be dominant in North American society but has become increasingly evident since our transformation from an agrarian nation in which most people stayed pretty much in place and the church was a cornerstone of communal life.
Nevertheless, it is often a physical and financial strain to travel to bedside and funeral.

The Council of the American Physical Society opposes proposals to require "equal time" for presentation in public school science classes of the biblical story of creation and the scientific theory of evolution.
In contrast to "Creationism," the systematic application of scientific principles has led to a current picture of life, of the nature of our planet, and of the universe which, while incomplete, is constantly being tested and refined by observation and analysis.
While our society must constantly guard against oversimplified or dogmatic descriptions of science in the education process, we must also resist attempts to interfere with the presentation of properly developed scientific principles in establishing guidelines for classroom instruction or in the development of scientific textbooks.

Fragmentation and Cohesion in American Society*
A society lacking in cohesiveness is likely to be one where persons do not care about, or worse, arc intolerant of others and believe others to feel the same way.
We are moving away from a society whose major resources of solidarity/cohesion were importantly determined by geography --whether the face-to-face presence of others such as kin and friends, neighborhoods or regions, to a society where community is ever less restricted to physical proximity.
In a society whose cohesiveness is based on ascription, such persons are more likely to be taken care of, because their position is not dependent on what they do, or choose, and others cannot as readily choose to abandon them.

ITHACA, N.Y. -- Maury Tigner, professor emeritus of physics and director of the Laboratory for Elementary-Particle Physics at Cornell University, is one of 12 winners of the American Physical Society's (APS) 2005 Leo Szilard Lectureship Award for work on boost phase intercept systems for national missile defense.
The annual prize, established "to recognize outstanding accomplishments by physicists in promoting the use of physics for the benefit of society in such areas as the environment, arms control and science policy," was awarded to members of a study group formed by the APS in early 2001.
Daniel Kleppner, the Lester Wolfe Professor of Physics Emeritus at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and co-chair of the APA study group, noted that Szilard's work was an inspiration for the group.
