  Movie Review -- American Psycho
American Psycho has nothing to do with American Beauty, just as American Beauty had nothing to do with American Pie.
American Psycho is particularly guilty of this charge.
But American Psycho is successful, though maybe not in the ways it was intended to be.

  AMERICAN PSYCHO
He lives in a fabulous and tastefully minimalist penthouse apartment (American Gardens Building on West 81st Street on the 11th floor, to be precise) with all of the proper fixings: modern art, fashionable furniture, and a great stereo system.
Considering his previous satiric film, NATURAL BORN KILLERS, his version of PSYCHO would have been most interesting, not to mention that it would have made for an effective one-two lampooning punch if the films were paired together on his resume.
AMERICAN PSYCHO achieves this level of status and goes even further until it establishes itself as a work that is daring, inventive, and always compelling.

The average filmmaker would turn "American Psycho" into an exploitative slasher flick, but Mary Harron and Guinevere Turner have adapted the controversial novel by Bret Easton Ellis into something unique and intriguing, a brilliant, thought-provoking social commentary thriller.
Both leading actors in "American Psycho" have previously portrayed Jesus Christ, Willem Dafoe in "The Last Temptation of Christ," and Christian Bale in "Mary, Mother of Jesus." Talk about versatility.
Through the strong central character, "American Psycho" suggests several themes about the 1980's, including society's obsession with outer perfection, conformity, the rising threshold of material fetishism, and the strong desire of stimulation by drugs, sex, money, and power.

There's been some hoopla surrounding the violent nature of American Psycho, but the soundtrack is not without its own drama.

In 1991, Ellis published the novel "American Psycho." He was 27 years old that winter, and everybody hated him.
Word was that "American Psycho" treated acts of torture with the same bland precision it used to describe the track-by-track progression of the latest Huey Lewis album.
People loathed "American Psycho" and they wanted to kill its author, but lost in all the blood and guts was one important fact: Ellis was well on his way to being as great a novelist as any alive today.

In 1991, Bret Easton Ellis' controversial novel "American Psycho" took the world by storm – women accused it of being misogynist, sexist filth and others were understandably shaken by its brutal and graphic depictions of unprovoked violence and torture.
Since its release, many critics have accused "American Psycho" of being a watered-down version of the book, being both "politically correct" and "lacking satire." However, I don't recall the last time I saw a man beat a dog to death with the heel of his shoe in a mainstream motion picture.
In fact, when "American Psycho" was previewed before the Motion Picture Association of America, they gave it an NC-17 rating – not for its violence, as one might expect, but rather for its threesome scene between Patrick and two prostitutes.

Whether it's a caustic indictment of yuppie Wall Street do-nothings with more money than they can shake a platinum American Express card at, or an equally derisive put-down of popular music (think Robert Palmer, Genesis, Huey Lewis and the News), American Psycho delivers its message–blam!–like a nail gun to the back of the head.
Save for one sensationalistic scene in a stairwell (featuring that old staple a chainsaw no less), American Psycho bottles up its horror in the mind and contradictions of its central character, leaving the graphic realization of his actions as much off-screen as possible.
