It was out in the open sun, midday and I was caught with slow film and had to shoot with a 600mm lens at f16/22 (small aperture required for minimal depth of field at the close distance).

I think this bird might be a juvenile/1w according to plumage pattern and that, given size and structure, the option of Allen's Purple Gallinule (P.alleni) in a rather juvenile stage should be taken into account.
However, if what the photo seems to show as yellowish legs could be confirmed and the wings falling shorter than tail ratio is also correct, plus the pale bill and face pattern are as seems to be, this might well be that species.
Perhaps Allen's Gallinule may be a better fit given the location, though I can't see too much in the photos to back up this suggestion...

I think in the earlier discussions people were really talking about whether it had a different coloured front, irrespective of what that colour should be called.
