ASCAP protects the rights of its members by licensing and distributing royalties for the non-dramatic public performances of their copyrighted works.

ASCAP was founded in New York City on February 13, 1914, to protect the rights of the more than 80,000 composers, songwriters, lyricists and music publishers who are its members.
ASCAP's function is to make sure that a writer's work is not used by another artist without paying the proper fee (called a royalty) or acquiring the proper permission.
ASCAP's first director was Victor Herbert, a composer and musician who strongly supported artists being paid for their work.

NEW YORK - The American Society of Composers, Authors & Publishers' (ASCAP) board of directors voted to abolish a fund - which commercial composers viewed as a cap - allocating a specified 10% of total television royalties to the commercial, promotional and announcement (CPA) community.
ASCAP maintained the amount was consistent with what it had been paying to the CPA sector.
ASCAP members were informed of the 10% policy reversal via a letter from ASCAP president/chairman of the board Marilyn Bergman.
