American System (economics) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It is a school of economic thought distinct from both the "British System" of Adam Smith and the "Socialist System" of Karl Marx.
The name, "American System," was coined by Clay to distinguish it, as a school of thought, from the competing theory of economics at the time, the British System represented by Adam Smith in his work Wealth of Nations.
After ten years of this system the American centennial celebration, celebrated in 1876 in Philadelphia at the Centennial Exposition, was formally opened by President Ulysses S. Grant [20], and served as a showcase for the achievements of the United States[21].

 The American Apologists
The American university system, particularly in the East, was dominated by strict apologists for the status quo.
However, the 1870s and 1880s also saw the arrival of a crop of young American academics who had acquired their doctorates at German universities and were consequently schooled in the methods and philosophy of the German Historical School.
The methodological and ideological battle between the "old school" apologists and the "new school" historicists came to a head in 1885, with the formation of the American Economic Association in 1885.

FDR's `New Deal': An Example of American System Economics
No wonder, that FDR during this time came in contact with politicians, who fought to solve the economic crisis with policies in the tradition of the American System and Lincoln's famous program for "internal improvements," the catchword for the nation's infrastructural development.
At the end of September 1932, as the economic and financial crisis deepened and even more banks failed, with many citizens losing their savings, FDR said: "Every man has a right to his own property, which means a right to be assured, to the fullest extent attainable, in the safety of his savings.
Among the many proofs that FDR was a conscious proponent of the "American System," is the speech he gave accepting the nomination as Presidential candidate for a second time in June 1936.

SSRN-Adverse Selection, Political Parties, and Policy Delegation in the American Federal System by George Krause, Ann ...
We extend research on the nexus of federalism, policy delegation, and American politics by asserting that partisan politics at both the national and subnational levels of government matter when explaining variations in U.S. federal intergovernmental policymaking.
Using a novel data set of 459 U.S. public laws spanning the 1947-1998 period, we uncover support for the importance of vertical partisan institutional relationships on policy delegation in American federalism.
The conclusions drawn from this study highlight the importance attached to vertical institutional relationships for understanding policy delegation by showing how state governments influence the balance of policymaking authority in the United States, even when formal decision-making authority resides at the national level.
