Because most watches lack a striking mechanism, such as a bell or gong to announce the passage of time, they are properly designated as timepieces, rather than clocks.
Expensive, collectible watches valued more for their workmanship and aesthetic appeal than for simple timekeeping often have purely mechanical movements and are powered by springs, even though mechanical movements are many times less accurate than quartz movements.
Because these watches are regulated by an external time source of extraordinarily high accuracy, they are never off by more than a small fraction of a second a day (depending on the quality of their quartz movements), as long as they can receive the external time signals that they expect.

[ELGIN] A Short History of American Watch Making
The development of the American watch industry was one of the symbols of America's emergence from an agricultural country to an industrial power.
This became known as the "American System of Manufacturing." By the 1860s-1870s the American watch companies had proved that this system could make watches that were every bit as good as all but the best watches that were made by hand.

...SweatShop Watch ...El Monte Thai Garment Workers: Slave Sweatshops
On August 2, 1995, the American public was horrified by press reports about the discovery at an apartment complex in El Monte, California, of seventy-two Thai garment workers who had been held in slavery for up to seventeen years, sewing clothes for some of the nation's top manufacturers and retailers.
The manufacturers' quality-control inspectors either knew or should have known that the orders they were giving to the sweatshop operators could not possibly have been filled at the downtown front shops.
This decision was a major setback for the manufacturers and retailers, who have hired some of the most upscale law firms in California to defend them, firms that have flooded the workers with endless discovery requests and withheld crucial information on the companies' actual practices.
