The American Type Founders Company was initially composed of twenty-three type foundries that joined together in 1892 in order to compete with the new typesetting machines, the Linotype and Monotype.
The ATF Library & Museum was to preserve the books and manuscripts that had descended through the various "family trees" of the combined type founding firms.
ATF declared bankruptcy late in 1933, and the Library and Museum was slated for sale.

American Type Founders - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
American Type Founders (ATF) was created in 1892 by the merger of 23 type foundries, including Binny and Ronaldson, Boston Type Foundry, Central Type Foundry, Dickinson Type Foundry, and Farmer, Little and Co. Other major competitors were absorbed soon thereafter, including Bruce Type Foundry in 1901 and Barnhart Brothers and Spindler in 1911.
ATF was the dominant American manufacturer of metal type from its creation in 1892 until at least the 1940s, and continued to be influential into the 1960s.
Morris Fuller Benton, arguably the most prolific type designer in history, served as ATF's chief type designer from 1900 to 1937, and many of his scores of designs continue to be popular today, including Franklin Gothic (Microsoft's corporate typeface), Bank Gothic, Broadway, and most of the Century family.

 Hansen Type Foundry
When the American Type Founders consolidation was organized in 1892, there were five type foundries in Boston, the Dickinson Type Founders, Boston Type Foundry, New England Type Foundry, Curtis & Mitchell Type Foundry, and the H. Hansen Type Foundry.
Maurice Annenberg writes about it: "Their type catalog of 1909 is rated one of the best that has ever been produced, comparable to the American Type Founders Company and Barnhart Brothers & Spindler." Unfortunately, H.C. Hansen was dismantled around 1922.
ATF's Central Type Foundry branch showed it as early as 1893, in usual form without lowercase, but with several sizes on each of several bodies in the manner of Copperplate Gothic.

His idea was to reduce the number of widths in a font to nine in order to cut time in justifying a body of type (inventing the idea of pre-determined widths in a font).
The invention came to be called “self-spacing” type, named by a compositor who was shocked by how much time was saved in using this method for setting his type.
American Metal Typefaces reports him as designing 221 faces in his lifetime, putting him at the top of the list as the most prolific type designer so far.

By the point system type founders cast type of a uniform size and height, whereas formerly fonts of pica or other type made by different founders would often vary slightly so that they could not be used together.

The Australian Henry Lewis Bullen (1857-1938) was publicity manager of American Type Founders and assembled their formidable typographical reference library, both to preserve the resources of the small American foundries driven into extinction by the creation of ATF, but also to provide invaluable research material for the company's own type revivals.

His machine could scale a drawing to the required size, as well as compressing or expanding the characters, and varying the weight slightly to compensate for the larger or smaller size--- this last being a crude form of the ``optical scaling'' done by skilled typographers making versions of the same font for different sizes.
Your options include: the aforementioned graphics files; type samples from a book, manual or font vendor's catalog; or simply viewing or printing out the fonts you have available on your computer system, if you have a reasonable variety.
Ironically, historians of type often relate the development of the ``modern'' letterforms to a then-current obsession with things Roman---in this case the strong contrast and sharp serifs of classical Roman inscriptions.
