Topic: American War of Indepedence

American Revolutionary War - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The war was the culmination of the American Revolution, a colonial struggle against political and economic policies of the British Empire.
American militiamen and their Indian allies marched to relieve the siege, but were ambushed and scattered at the Battle of Oriskany on August 6.
The northern, southern, and naval theaters of the war converged in 1781 at Yorktown, Virginia.

Naval operations in the American Revolutionary War - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The first ranges from 1775 till the summer of 1778 as the Royal Navy was engaged in cooperating with the troops employed against the American revolutionaries, on the coasts, rivers and lakes of North America, or in endeavouring to protect British commerce against the enterprise of American privateers.
When the war began, the British had 131 ships of the line, but the Royal Navy was in poor condition due the corrupt administration of Lord Sandwich, the First Lord of the Admiralty.
During the first three years of the war, therefore, the Royal Navy was primarily used in support of operations on land, aiding General Thomas Gage and General Sir William Howe during the siege of Boston by seeking stores for the army and in supplying naval brigades.

World War I led to new nation-states in Europe being encouraged by the United States, who were opposed to the old Imperial Empires, and by France, who wished to isolate Germany and Austria by a series of client states.
Several commentators supportive of the war have indicated they feel that news that paints the US in a negative light is giving aid and comfort to the enemy because it undermines the national solidarity of the U.S. to commit sufficiently to achieve final victory in the War on terrorism.
War proponents dispute these claims as being ironic, and counter that these military actions are manifestations of international cooperation to police against tyrannical regimes, for example the Taliban in Afghanistan, and the Baath Party in Iraq.

I think that if the British just managed to hold onto the states, the war itself would have shown them that it could not continue as it was doing if it had any hope of avoiding a series of further embarrassing conflicts with its colonies, which would inevitably lead to embarrassing defeat after defeat.

Stung by their defeats, the Americans would lose heart for the war and what was left of the Saigon Government would be forced to reach an agreement with the NLF and Hanoi which - after a time - would simply take over in the South.
One of the many great myths of the war was that LBJ dragged the country kicking and screaming into an unpopular war without the approval of the American people or the consent of Congress.
Indeed, an indication of the strong level of support for the war in the early years can be found by examining the margin by which massive appropriations for the war were approved in each house of Congress over the next few years.

South Vietnam - Facts, Information, and Encyclopedia Reference article
The dominant political rationale for supporting the South was claimed at the time to have been based in its anti-communist ideology, and a desire to limit the expansion of the North government, which had allied itself with the Soviet Union.
Following American troop withdrawal from the war in 1973, the South Vietnam government continued fighting the NLF and North Vietnam, until, overwhelmed by the opposition, it finally surrendered on April 30, 1975.
However, forced to carry the burden left by the Americans, the South Vietnamese army actually started to perform rather well and in 1970 was clearly winning the war against the Communists, though with continued American air support.

His developing leadership in protecting the home front was demonstrated when, during the French and Indian War c1763, Darius bankrolled the efforts of his brother, Captain Amasa Sessions, to raise and command a company of soldiers to fight in that effort.
By this time, the battle was brewing between revolutionary and loyalist elements in the American colonies, and war was seen as almost inevitable.
During the American War of Indepedence it is known that Darius Sessions clearly sided with the revolutionary causes, and returned to his farm in Connecticut which he had purchased in 1761.
