The wedding in many ways is an afterthought in the film as the focus is on the events leading up to the wedding.
When I saw "American Pie 2", I knew I was watching a lame sequel, a poor attempt to cash in on the success of the first picture.
"American Wedding" was a pleasant surprise for me. It contains twice as much toilet humor as the first two films and does not possess the strongest plot, but it made me laugh on more than one occasion.

'American Wedding' is a pie in the face to its once-funny premise
The emphasis on Stifler is symptomatic of what's wrong with "American Wedding." He was never the star of "American Pie." He was always the buffoonish nemesis, the obnoxious high school success who gets his comeuppance.
As the bride in "American Wedding," she's set up to be at the center of the film, but there's nothing to be done with Michelle -- she's a punch line, not a personality -- and so she must be shoved to the side.
Chris Klein, part of the original "American Pie" quartet, is nowhere to be found in the third installment, and his sitting this one out probably constitutes a good career move.

 "American Wedding" - Salon
The first movie in the franchise, Paul and Chris Weitz's "American Pie," was a surprise hit for some not-so-surprising reasons: The movie posited itself as an unapologetically raunchy sex comedy, but it was also astonishingly intelligent, sensitive and sweet in its approach toward teenage sexuality, particularly that of young women.
"American Pie II," which reunited nearly the whole gang from the first movie, including Jason Biggs' shambling but sexy Jim and Alyson Hannigan's randy band-camp nerd Michelle, felt forced and strained, and whatever sweetness it had felt glued-on after the fact.
Hannigan and Biggs are back, and at first it's a pleasure just to see their faces -- to anyone who loved the first movie, these characters are like old friends, and the actors seem to be struggling to do the best they can with the material.

TheMovieBoy Review - American Wedding (2003)
If the high school-set "American Pie" set up characters we grew to love, and the college-themed "American Pie 2" continued their natural progression with a surefire accuracy, then "American Wedding" never feels like anything more than tacked-on.
Jim and Stifler's run-in with a wedding cake and two dogs is a comic highlight, the culmination of its setup ribticklingly ballsy, while a bachelor party gone awry reminds of a superbly edited screwball comedy.
"American Pie" and "American Pie 2" blended smoothly together, a beautifully crafted rites of passage duo that were always funny, but not afraid to remain honest about friendships and romance.

Okay, when anyone mentions the words "bachelor party" to an American, thoughts of a wild night of a debauchery with men engaging in heavy drinking and participating in activities that can be considered "unbecoming" of a civilized member of the male (or should I say human?) species, most likely creep into their head.

 The African-American Theme Wedding
The African-American wedding is truly a celebration of the marriage and the couple's roots.
Its symbolism can be expressed in different ways: in the selection of the music (such as a gospel choir, drums, African dance), in colorful or African attire for the wedding party, in the display of the table decorations, and by providing an ethnic feast, including the cake decorations.

American Wedding certainly doesn’t falter in the porkys-esque sequences, the best of which is the bachelor party scene.
