American Wrestling Association - Biocrawler   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
American Wrestling Association was a professional wrestling organization, based in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
The AWA was influential in Pro Wrestling USA, an attempt to establish a national federation to compete against the WWF, in 1984.
The AWA lost momentum as Verne Gagne overemphasized his son Greg in AWA storylines, and the promotion folded in the early 1990s after most of its talent had left for the World Wrestling Federation, now World Wrestling Entertainment.

Among them was overemphasizing his son Greg in AWA storylines (which led to speculation of nepotism by Verne within the company); and failure to make Hulk Hogan the focus of his company when he had the chance.
Abroad, the AWA had working agreements with Japanese promotions International Pro Wrestling (1969 to 1980), then All Japan Pro Wrestling (1980 to 1988, although the relationship was strained in 1986 by the AWA Title debacle surrounding Stan Hansen), and, near the end, New Japan Pro Wrestling.
The influence of Verne Gagne and the AWA as a whole in professional wrestling is immeasurable.

In Japan, Gotch was known as "The god of Pro Wrestling" due to his influence in shaping the Japanese professional wrestling style.
Karl Gotch excelled in amateur wrestling, competing (as Charles Istaz) for Belgium in the 1948 Olympics in both freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling.
His more athletic, less entertainment-based wrestling style was passed on to Inoki, who further developed it into the strong style that has been the norm in New Japan Pro Wrestling ever since.

Until the late 1980s, American Wrestling Association was considered one of the greatest promotions in the wrestling scene.
Rich businessman and dedicated wrestling fan Jake Rivers met with Gagne, and they both agreed on letting Rivers open a new brand under the protective wing of the old AWA glory.
As said in a press conference by Jake Rivers himself, AWA New Breed’s main focus would be pure wrestling rather than the classic gimmicky AWA appeal, to fit better the new breed chosen.

Wrestling fans, especially on the internet, will swear that either Hulk Hogan or Ric Flair is the epitome of what makes professional wrestling great today.
There isn?t one entity that made professional wrestling; the fact is, everyone who has ever worked hard on their character, in the ring, and on the microphone has made professional wrestling what it is today.
Anyone and everyone who has been in professional wrestling?s illustrious history has had their thumb-print in the success of professional wrestling; therefore, they also made professional wrestling what it is today.

Pat O' Conner was named the inaugural AWA champ, but when he failed to meet Gagne within 90 days, the new organization stripped O`Conner of the title and awarded it to Gagne.
In many ways, Verne Gagne was the A.W.A., through his many years as champion, ambassador of the American Wrestling Association, and when away from the camera, owner/operator of the AWA.

The good news is that wrestling history is cyclical and when you look at the more than 150 years of American heritage, you'll notice the McMahon era is only one moment -- if an important one -- on this continuum.
At the end of the 19th century, wrestling matches were not predetermined contests and there was little of the character building of today.
The tectonic shifts in wrestling have all occurred thanks to technological developments, which means that something might come about to topple Vince, which (in my opinion) would be cause for celebration.

Wrestling back then was family entertainment, fun and harmless, and for me, Da Crusher, was the personification of Milwaukee.
These grapplers wrestled, in some cases, into their 60s and had the battle scars to prove it: cauliflower ears (from innumerable headlocks) and scar tissue on their foreheads (yes, they actually took "the cut" to create the requisite blood bath, a staple of virtually every main event).
Wrestling has always been sports entertainment, a battle between good and evil where both the plot and the outcome were predetermined in advance.
