Fact Sheet: House Sparrow Control   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
Given the widespread problems caused by House Sparrows, NABS advises that it is the responsibility of every nest box trail operator to ensure that no House Sparrows fledge from their boxes.
Within 25 years, however, they realized the seriousness of their mistake: the House Sparrow population had increased at an explosive and alarming rate, and the birds were causing extensive damage to crops and fruit trees.
Since sparrows are gregarious, the success of cage traps depends on the birds being attracted to the food and to each other.

The American Tree Sparrow is a common winter visitor in backyards all across southern Canada and the northern United States.
As in most birds, the American Tree Sparrow is sensitive to changes in day length, which influence the growth of the sex organs.
If the area is about 10-20% filled by tree sparrows, and they have 1-ha territories, as is the case near Churchill, Manitoba where they have been well studied, then approximately 10 to 20 million pairs should be breeding.

The American tree sparrow, Spizella arborea, is migratory, breeding in Alaska and northern Canada, and wintering in southern Canada and the northern United States south to northern Texas.
The breeding habitat of this species is open scrubby areas, such as open tundra with scattered shrubs, and areas near treeline; during migration and on its wintering grounds, the American tree sparrow utilizes fields, marshes, and residential neighborhoods.
In winter, when seeds on the ground are hidden by snow, American tree sparrows have been known to hover over weeds, beat them with their wings to dislodge seeds, and then to fly to the surface of the snow to find and consume the seeds.

 Birds - American Sparrow Hawk
The sparrow hawk would be a universal favorite were it not for its rascality in devouring little birds.
Unlike other birds of prey, the sparrow hawk builds no nest, but lays in the hollows of trees, crevices of rocks, or even about outbuildings on a farm ; but a deserted woodpecker's hole is its ideal home.
Although this bird arrives from the south in March, it does not nest until May, when from three to seven cream or fawn-colored eggs, finely and evenly marked with reddish brown, are carefully tended by both the mates that remain lovers for life.

American Tree Sparrows are complete migrants, meaning there is no overlap between breeding and wintering range.
Migration is late in the fall and early in the spring, with the birds spending the breeding season in the far north.
Most of the American Tree Sparrow’s nesting area is remote from human disturbance and well protected, although large-scale development in the far north may threaten this species.

The Eurasian Tree Sparrow is an Old World species that was introduced to North America and is locally abundant in two mid-western states.
