The coat of arms in its current form was adopted in 1998, replacing one based on the Confederate battle flag, which commemorated the immigration to Americana of large numbers of Confederate veterans and their families after the American Civil War.
The flag is one of Lauro Ribeiro Escobar's standard designs, a series of progressively smaller triangles based on the hoist forming pointed chevrons pointing toward the fly of the flag, in this case white, blue, and white,on a red field, with the coat of arms in the hoist.
