AMERICUS — Sumter Regional Hospital has finally won approval to begin demolition of the 147-bed hospital laid waste by a March 1 tornado, hospital officials announced Monday.
The EF3 tornado that killed two people in Americus March 1 left the hospital uninhabitable and prompted the evacuation of 43 patients by bus, ambulance and car to area hospitals.
While the damaged hospital has remained “an eyesore” since the storm, it has been safely fenced off, unlike a few local structures that remain in a damaged state and highly dangerous to the public, he said.
