The are two primary divisions of Marsupialia: the Ameridelphia, the American marsupials; and the Australidelphia, the Australian marsupials.
Order Micorbiotheria (which has only one species, the Monito del Monte) is found in South America but is believed to be more closely related to the Australidelphia.
Those in Ameridelphia are often called "opossums", while those in Australidelphia are "possums".

Ameridelphia includes the New World "pouched" mammals (though most lack pouches) such as extant opossums and various extinct forms resembling jumping rats, "insectivores," and carnivorans.
Xenarthrans are a peculiar group that includes sloths (both tree sloths and ground sloths, some giant), anteaters, armadillos, glyptodonts (large armored mammals) and pampatheres.

<<"Ameridelphia" is the paraphyletic group that includes all not too basal (*Deltatheridium*, *Sinodelphys*, *Asiatherium*...) metatherians and excludes the Australian ones.
In this paper, Alphadelphia, Ameridelphia and Australidelphia are three successive grades, of which the last just so happens to be holophyletic (an uninteresting side fact that isn't even mentioned), because it hasn't produced any descendants yet.
