When we first started examining the online brokerage industry, Ameritrade looked to be a contender for our "Best Pick." Their $8 commissions thrilled us, and we thought they might be "the one" we would fall in love with when all the stock trading was history.
Ameritrade also disappointed us with a poor layout of their Web site.
Overall, Ameritrade made a lackluster showing and earned an overall grade of "C." We felt like we were left at the altar.

Ameritrade expects to lead the online brokerage industry in trades after the acquisition by handling an average of 239,000 trades a day and to build on its roughly 25 percent share of the active investor market.
Ameritrade plans to obtain the financing for this acquisition from a consortium of Wall Street firms, including Citigroup Inc., Merrill Lynch and Co., UBS AG and JPMorgan Chase and Co. One loan of $1.65 billion is to be paid back in seven years, while a second loan of $250 million is due in six years.
Customers of Ameritrade and TD Waterhouse may have to wait until after the deal closes to learn exactly what this will mean for them.

Ameritrade discovered the loss in February when it received a damaged package containing a number of backup tapes shipped from its secure facilities in the U.S. Katrina Becker, an Ameritrade spokeswoman, said the shipping company caused the damage to the package.
Ameritrade immediately launched an investigation and learned four tapes were missing, three of which were subsequently recovered at the shipper's facility.
Ameritrade has changed some policies and procedures in response to the mishap, Becker said, but she declined to discuss specifics.
