Amersham is widely known because of a multinational pharmaceutical company, Amersham plc (originally known as Amersham International, and acquired in 2004 by the American company General Electric), that took its name from the town.
Amersham is split into two distinct areas: Amersham on the Hill, which is close to the railway station, and Old Amersham, which contains St. Mary's, a 13th century church, and several old inns.
Amersham sent two MPs to the unreformed House of Commons, and was considered a rotten borough until the Reform Act 1832 stripped it of its representation.

 A Potted History of Amersham
Amersham is located 27 miles north west of London in the county of Buckinghamshire.
Amersham (or as it was known then as Elmodesham) is mentioned in the Doomsday Survey of 1086 and in the year 1200, King John granted a charter for a weekly market, an annual fair, two members of Parliament as a "Pocket Borough" which lasted up to the Reform Act of 1832.
From the 14th century, Amersham was an active centre of Dissent: on the hill above Amersham is The Martyrs' Memorial to those who were burnt at the stake for their religious beliefs during the reign of Queen Mary.

Amersham Band is a 4th section brass band based in South Buckinghamshire.
The band was established in 1890 as 'The Amersham Sons of Temperance Band' and flourishes today with over 50 members including our training band.

A short distance northwest of London lies the town of Amersham in the rolling hills of Buckinghamshire.
It is believed to be the Amersham Manor before 1637 when William Drake purchased it for the family as the Dower House.
This commemorates the six Amersham men and one woman who, in the early years of the 16th century, were burned at the stake for their faith as Lollards.

A new signal box was built at Amersham to control the whole line from Amersham to Chalfont and Chesham, replacing the previous Amersham box and others in the area.
Bob was relief porter at Amersham in 1939 and became a well know face at the station over the years.
Today trains for London from Amersham are mostly "fast", but before the quadrupling of the track all trains had to pass through the stations from Rickmansworth to Harrow (Northwood, Pinner etc.).
